It was a cool summer night. You had gotten into another fist fight with your younger brother. You were grounded, if I remember correctly, but they should’ve known you’d sneak out. You just happened to sneak out to meet me. We were at the park and I was practicing playing my guitar. It was a gift from my dad.
“How’s Becky doing?” You asked.
I nodded and said, “Fought me when I was trying to put her to bed.”
I remembered you laughed. I heard from the others from the orphanage that it was rare you ever smiled around people. Only around Mary and Clarice. Your laugh is a lot like your smile, warm, infectious, and something I love.

“Ah younger siblings can be a pain,” You started, “Today my brother and I got into a fight.” You gestured to your shiner, “little brat gave me this.”
I could tell you were calling him a brat in a light hearted way but I still had to ask,
“Why do you two fight? This has happened a lot.”
You paused and looked down,
“He...wants to go to university.”
“Well, why is that a bad thing?”
“Vincent, Jake and I have been by each other's sides since day one. I...don’t want him to leave. I won’t be able to protect him.”
You paused again,
“And...I’ll miss him.”
“Well I don’t really think fighting is the answer, Jack…” I said with a sheepish smile, “I mean for one, it’s amazing he even got into a university with a 4 year scholarship and secondly, he’ll come back. He doesn’t need you to protect him.”
“I know.”

I sigh, you sigh in reply, and I go back to playing my guitar. Other than that we were in silence for a while until I heard you, and I still can’t believe this, quietly singing along. You had a nice voice. You must’ve noticed I was listening and maybe you could tell I liked it as you started to sing louder. Soon even I joined in, giving you back up, you got really into it too. It’s a shame I can’t remember the song.
When it ended you laid back in the grass and looked up at the stars,
“You tell no one about this, alright?” You said with a smile.
“Oh?” I said putting my guitar to the side and laying next to you, “Well what if I don’t want to?”
You paused, thinking for a second,
“Vincent you’re the only person I want to hear me sing.”
My face must’ve turned red at that thought, but you didn’t notice,
“So if you tell anyone, I might just pawn off your guitar.”
You laughed and I joined in.
“Alright, fine, Jackie boy, you win. I won’t tell anyone. Not even Mary.”
“Good boy.”
You chuckled and once again we were in silence, staring at the vast blanket of twinkling spots above our heads.
“You have a lovely voice.” I said.
“You too.” You replied, I felt you shift closer as you did.
“You really should sing more.”
“You really should play more.”
“Oh saying my guitar skills are b--”
I’m cut off by you getting up on your forearm and looking down at me,
“Vincent I like your music a lot. I like…”
You trailed off as you looked at me. You started to lean in closer, soon only mere inches away from me.
“Jack! There you are!”
It was Mary,
“My dad is very crossed with you.”
You laughed,
“Ha, crossed, I get it.”
Mary crossed her arms and huffed,
“Vinny, don’t encourage his behavior by hanging out with him. Jack come home right now.”
“Alright, alright, Mare Bear. I’m coming. See you, Vincent.”
You got up and followed Mary out.
