Hi! would it be possible to write better description in the categories? For exampel in "personality type" to write "how is your character as a person?"
just a small suggestion :)
Site-specific suggestions
Agree with liopleurodon. More detailed relationship summaries between characters would be great, as well as an option to add friends who aren't "best friends" or rivals who aren't necessarily "arch enemies."
A lot of awesome suggestions in this thread (I've sent a few observations in through the help function, but I like that this exists, where we can refine each other's ideas).
Something I was thinking of - and perhaps this makes more sense as it's own tab under, say, countries - would be a page for customs (common cultural practices). It could include information about who practices the custom, why it's practiced, how it might have come about as an accepted practice, any taboos related to the custom ("The Denari consider it highly offensive to eat in front of people you aren't intimate with…"), any exceptions ("…unless of course, it's during a mating cycle and you're making an invitation to a potential mate!"), any impact this custom has on the world ("As a result, the economy sees a bi-Yunal boost in pop-up restaurants specifically organized around invitational practices, as well as a boost in imports of luxury food items from other countries."), and so on and so forth.
I also second more detailed (or perhaps, the solution is to be more vague) summaries for relationships. The ability to add a text description of their relationship would be most helpful.
Also, in thinking about the ability to nest universes: not sure if this is possible with the site setup, but perhaps it's merely being able to crosslink a universe, rather than nest within?
Thanks for all the work you do on the site. Always open to help, bounce ideas, or test limits.
Oh! And a place for diseases! (Physical ailments, psychological expressions, spiritual curses or boons, etc etc)
Another idea- it'd be easier if when you have a discussion notification, when you clicked on the button it would give you the option of going to the forum or to open up the discussion where your latest notification popped up. Just saying, I find it a bit of a struggle to hunt down which discussion my notifications had come from.
I'd think it'd be cool if there was a vehicle pages. Like for Scifi you got spaceships and walkers and stuff and for modern you got stuff like bob's car. Fantasy could use it too for stuff like ships or chariots.
Granted I don't know if there's something in premium for stuff like this already but i think it'd be cool.
I agree with everyone, and hope that these changes can be put in soon.
A suggestion for andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer) (Can't tag people without crashing):
Pinning discussions to the top of forums to make them noticeable. The General Chat forum is getting clogged up with people making their own posts to introduce themself, so putting the official introductions (https://www.notebook.ai/forum/general-chat/introduce-yourself) post at the top would really help stop this.
Odd suggestion… would we be able to have a field added to our Character's page for a 'Theme'? I tend to make playlists for my characters, and it would be nice to have those to click on when working on character stuff, and when/if I make character profiles public it might be a cool option for people to click on to see what music is "inspiration" or representative of the character they're viewing.
@itsZombles oh yes i use the notes section atm but i know very much what you mean.
adding a custom section for music that inspired you could be a good work around for the moment until such a page is added or dismissed.
If you go to the "characters" page where you see them all, being able to sort/organize them in different ways would be nice. Like not just alphabetically, but by universe or something. (…I've created 50-something characters, sooooo…yeah. That'd be helpful.)
And on that note, it'd be nice if I could just see a collection of everything related to one particular universe.
Being able to choose what parts of a character goes public, if you choose to do that. (So I could have the character public, except for the spoilery backstory, or something like that. Right now, I just gotta keep them private or put it all in the private notes.)
The tiny crop and orientation for uploaded images is kind of…weird. What might be cooler is if we could set some kind of "avatar" for each character, and then add additional images as well? And just let them be ordinary squares or whatever size…
I mean, treating each character page kind of like a mini social media profile would be kind of cool.
I think there was something else but my sleepy brain can't remember it, so I might be back tomorrow…
Edit: Oh yeah, just a reiteration of what's said before, and that's more customization in the social parts. I have some characters labeled as "best friends" even though they'd just be…ordinary friends.
Also being able to label how a relationship with someone changes over time would be really cool! Like I have two characters that are sisters, but at first they have a very antagonistic relationship and then over time they become friends and embrace being sisters.
Also could there be a user dropdown for the Magic or have a magic user option in the characters section?
When you're creating a new location, it doesn't give you the option to select from towns, countries, or landmarks, though I'm guessing this is because those pages came out later?
Hi all,
I've just started using this, and I've sent through a couple of suggestions, and I'm curious to see what others think about them:
A change made to the Groups, so that creatures can be added, I can see the merit in someone needing a taxonomic rank: domain, kingdom, phylum, class, etc. (although I've started adding those manually in the category customisation). I'd like it so I can go into, say, the 'Undead' or 'Xoanthrope' Group, and see all of the undead or xoanthropes I have created on the one page.
Also, I often have cause to create a creature as a character, but would like to be able to link the creature to the character, similar to Race and Character.
@FantaPop I'm not 100% sure on this as I don't have premium atm, but the way location vs towns/countries/landmarks is that they are all their own page types. So they do not link to each other in that way.
Towns, countries, and landmarks are already out you just have to make them from their own creation sections. If you go make them visible from the customize pages section.
So I don't think that's a bug, though it is a cool suggestion
I just want to echo the opinion that being able to add custom fields to pre-existing categories would be a lifesaver!
A section for Governments might be good. Personally I have a large world with different countries, each with their own governments. It would be nice to have a place to put notes for each one like we have for Religion.
I haven't been responding because I've been hard at work implementing many of the awesome suggestions here. :)
A big update just went live (and you can read about what all is in it here), but I've also been super looking forward to being able to quote everyone here and say "DONE!".
So here goes! :)
Under Creatures, I hope it gets the same taxonomy features as Flora soon.
DONE!
Might I suggest that the birthplace dropdown be changed to select town pages rather than the current location pages?
You can now link birthplaces (and a few other existing fields that refer to a town) to either a location or a town. They're treated as separate fields currently, but I'm hoping to let you choose your own link types very soon which should clean that up nicely.
an option to add friends who aren't "best friends" or rivals who aren't necessarily "arch enemies."
I have some characters labeled as "best friends" even though they'd just be…ordinary friends.
Characters now also have a link for "Friends" and a link for "Enemies", alongside their existing "Best Friends" and "Arch-enemies" links.
Dividing Produce into "Edible Parts," "Medicinal Purposes," and "Material Uses" would be nice.
I left individual fields for nuts/berries/etc to accommodate weird plants on other planets, but I did go ahead and add a "Material Uses" field to all Flora.
I'd think it'd be cool if there was a vehicle pages. Like for Scifi you got spaceships and walkers and stuff and for modern you got stuff like bob's car. Fantasy could use it too for stuff like ships or chariots.
These fit well under the new Technology page. :)
Pinning discussions to the top of forums to make them noticeable.
This was a great idea, and done. I plan to do a bit more of this soon, as well.
Also could there be a user dropdown for the Magic or have a magic user option in the characters section?
You'll now find a magic link for characters in their Nature section.
A change made to the Groups, so that creatures can be added
DONE!
I can see the merit in someone needing a taxonomic rank: domain, kingdom, phylum, class, etc. (although I've started adding those manually in the category customisation)
Done (with the second half of browsing each group coming soon).
A section for Governments might be good.
Very much done, with tons of awesome fields and associated writing prompts. (I love this one.)
There's lots of other cool new stuff sprinkled around that you might find, too.
(And, if I didn't get to your specific suggestion yet, that doesn't mean it's not coming. I only have 24 hours in the day just like you! :) And as for all the suggestions around editing fields: that's my next project.)
Happy worldbuilding, everyone!
Wow, @andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer) you were not kiddin' about being busy.
Thank you for adding planets and deities, this is like an EXTREMELY early Christmas for me.
I think maybe adding a 'Clothing' section, or even a 'Style' section, into the 'Characters' category would be very helpful. Often when I am looking at others characters I find it hard to picture them because no clothes have been described D:! It would especially be helpful if a item or piece of clothing is important to your character or story and you can't actually use the 'Item' category because you are not a premium member.
@Celestial-B i'm not sure i understand that last section. Can you not access the items pages? I thought that was already open to all users
@Lengna Now it lets me xD The other day when I tried it I couldn't get on if for some reason. Its fine now though!
@Celestial-B
silly glitches! Glad its working now though :3
@andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer)
May I suggest a notifications tab at the top of the forums (near where the inbox tab is)?
I know that following threads is already a thing, but you can really only be notified through email. This is fine, but it's not ideal.
Having a tab at the top to show you notifications for only threads you've followed would be super useful.
I dunno. It's your project. I'm just making a suggestion.
Edit: Also, think about pinning this thread to the top of the thing.
@Chronicle 100% yes. I don't follow the email notifications that well, and I need to figure out how to set up an in-site notification system for them. I actually just pushed up some forum redesigns that should make finding threads with notifications easier, but having them in a queue from a tab at the top would be wonderful also. I'll see if I can figure that out – thanks for the feedback!
I absolutely love this site, I've only been using it for a few days but this has definitely been the best way I've found to make sense of my world. I do have a few suggestions, mostly regarding the linking system. It would be really helpful to link Items to Locations and/or Landmarks. Also at the moment it is impossible to link Deities to Religions, the only option is to link Characters, on the same note, it would be nice if, as well as having an open ended field for religion, if there was also a link field. It would also be helpful to link Characters and Races to Countries. It would also be nice if, in the Character history section, if you could link Characters or groups from the Character's past. Like ex-lovers, former affiliates, etc. Also, I don't know if this is possible already or impossible altogether, but can users create custom fields in the categories that are already available? For example, could I add a new field in my character's social category? That would be pretty awesome. Once again I love this site and I'm excited to watch the site grow and be a part of it!
First of all @andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer), I have to commend you on how quickly you manage to get new updates out. I've got a couple suggestions:
For Characters, I think it would be nice to have some more fields to expand upon their personalities. Instead of just the "Personality Type" field, it would be nice to break that into 2 other fields for "Outward Personality"(what they show to other characters) and "Inward Personality"(what they keep hidden from others). Also, I think the "History" tab should be supplemented with another tab for the history of that character during the actual story.
This would definitely be a long term project, but I would love to have a storyboard or "corkboard" feature. To elaborate: We have "index cards" of all of our scenes, and we can arrange and connect them in any order we want. On the cards, we can write a brief summary(let's say 500 character limit) of the scene, and link to all of the characters, items, locations, etc. involved. You hover the cursor over one of the cards, and it displays the brief summary along with the numbers of all the linked pages(but only the number), and if you click on the card, it takes you to the actual page for the scene(in a new browser tab of course). This feature would probably be best put at the top left where the "Home", "Discussions", and "Scratchpad" are. And of course, we can share all of our storyboards if we want.
Would it be possible to add the ability to nest/link religions to other religions? Trying to keep track of which religions spawned which cults/etc. is sort of hard at the moment, especially if you want to have multiple religions and cults in the same 'verse.

If it’s not too much to ask, a thing that may be useful is a tab in Characters for Sexuality
