It’s super great to develop your own style, but before you can do that, you need to draw from life. Start by practicing realism because those skills are the backbone of a successful semi-realism. You learn the rules, and then you can break them.

I think what they're trying to say, is that learning the basic fundamentals of how to draw realistic helps with ANY style, even if said style is anime. I like it though. It's very cute, and while it has it's issues, you already addressed them.
