The creature moved, instead of resting on his hand, came to rest on the man's lap, seeming more like a lap-dog. It nestled down, feeling rather safe. It was warm, and offered 'walls' so to speak, a nice place to rest from larger predators. Hearing the name, the creature seemed to give a chirrup in agreement, as if liking the name.
Meredith gladly took the soup, blowing on the top of it before siping some off the edge of the old mug.

You could cut the tension with a knife, luckily both of them remember the children and stop screaming
