I have a character who is completely sheltered from society (which is anarchy-not-quite) and he learned free will and named himself. he has no idea of social norms, so the stranger the better.

how about "Sum", which is "[I] am" in latin? I went to it because you character learned free will. Dunno about your world, if there is latin in it, I just throwing ideas ^^

Schron means "shelter" in Polish.
Riparo means "shelter" in Italian.
Tremere means "shiver" in Latin.
Noctis means "night" in Latin.

These might help you out, I really like them, personally. I hope they help.

Asuka. One of the kanji combinations is 'to fly' and 'bird', which I kinda see fitting with the 'free will' element.
