Hypothetical Question...

Hello~! My name's L.C and I'm here to ask a hypothetical question!

So I have a character whom I will name A. Since that's the letter his name starts with anyways. :)

So character A is a very apathetic and closed off character. He is at the time of this hypothetical event 19.
He has seen a handful of people close to him die and is fleeing from the same fate. He suffers from severe trauma and has great difficulty trusting people. He is trying to flee the country, and in his desperation to do so, he will do just about anything for cash at this point.

Now let's say a girl of high social status… (Queen, perhaps– I dunno. lol. XD) gives birth to an illegitimate child. She does not want the public to know about it, yet is unwilling to kill it. She offers a high reward to anyone who will take it and do with it as they please.

Would you say it would be unreasonable for character A to take this child in? Why or why not? If not, any insecurities you think might come up from this relationship? If so, what do you think would have to change about A?

Thanks for the help in advance! I've been wondering about this for a long while.

Hypothetically, A might would take the child just for the reward and plan on abandoning it. But before he can get rid of it he accidentally starts to like it and finds that he can't.
Perhaps it could even lead into his past and the people he's lost. Maybe it reminds him of a sibling or friend that he couldn't save and sees this as a second chance.

I would call it unreasonable for A to take in the child. Sure, he needs the money, but since he's already lost people dear to him, keeping the child alive and safe would just add to his problems.

Also, @WaffleWizard I don't think it'd make sense for him to want to abandon the child, as he can't guarantee the child will live (meaning he could kill the child, and anyone would think of that risk), and like I previously mentioned, he's already lost people dear to him (giving me the impression he'd have issues with the thought killing somebody, especially on purpose).

@xX_KawaiiWolfie_Xx Thank you! It's great to see both sides of the coin while I'm trying to figure this out. You are correct in most of your guesses, and I think that's pretty cool and shows a bit of understanding for the character. :) Out of curiosity, what would you say would need to change about A to be able to do that?
Perhaps I'll just need to toe the line to pull this off believably, between what you've said and what @WaffleWizard said… ？(･･*)｡｡oＯ

It really depends on his personality. Maybe he wasn't even going to let the child die. Maybe he was going to try to pawn it off to someone else.
Whatever the reason it seems like a fun idea for whatever else lies in store for your story.

Doing it for the money makes sense to me, but I guess one thing to consider would be how much of a responsibility the child would be. Fleeing the country is going to be hard for your character, and having a child could slow him down quite a lot. Regardless of what you end up doing, I think it would be good to have A think really long and hard about how this could affect him before he makes a decision.

@WaffleWizard It wouldn't be easy to pawn the child off, sadly. Questions will arise about it's biology at some point in it's life, and the girl would be found out regardless. Some people might even report him for trying to abandon the child (because people are just THAT petty).

@Cassiopeia You could maybe make it to where since he's lost so many people, A's determined to keep the child alive, and then only if it gets bad enough will he abandon the child?
