I walked towards Adam. He was on the ground, unable to move. Was I foolish or wise for talking to him, I will never know.
“I’m sorry for all the damage I’ve done,” said Adam.
“It’s—” I started.
“I’m sorry for ever thinking we could ever have a thing between us.”
“Listen. I’m at fault. So is everyone else here. We were stupid. This would have never happened if we weren’t assholes to you."
“I’m… I’m sorry… forgive me…” He died. I had indirectly caused this to happen.”
Acyn stumbled down the stairs, towards where Caspian was lounging on one of the velvet couches. Acyn couldn’t even remember why he had come as he saw the girl who was seated on Caspian’s left. His entire body tensed.
“Can we go?” He asked, his hands were tucked into his jacket pockets. Cas pushed the girl away and stood.
“Sure.” Acyn felt bad, they had come out here for this party, though he knew deep down Caspian had only invited him because Will couldn’t come. But Acyn was drunk and couldn’t think through his actions properly, so he let Cas lead him outside, where their carriage awaited.
“How much did you drink?” Cas seemed sober enough, at least he wasn’t slurring his words.
Not the way Acyn did as he said, “Not much.” Cas helped him into the carriage and alerted the driver to take them back to Velaris.
Cas pulled himself into the carriage and locked the door behind him. Acyn fidgeted in his seat.
“Are you okay?” Cas asked, scooting in closer. Acyn nearly fell out of his seat.
“I am great. You seem just fine, my apologies if I ruined your time with that girl.” Cas narrowed his eyes.
“What are you talking about?” Acyn couldn’t stop thinking about the way Cas’s hair fell or the way his brown eyes glittered, even in the dark.
Acyn was never like this, never so unmoored, but he couldn’t stop himself before the words made their way out of his mouth. “Why did you invite me tonight?”
“Because we are friends, Acyn. I think you might have drunk a bit too much, do you need to puke?” Cas moved the hair that was falling in front of Acyn’s eyes back, and Acyn froze at the touch.
“Was it because Will couldn’t come?” This time Cas stilled.
“You are just as much my friend as Will is, Acyn. I invited you because I wanted to spend time with you, but you disappeared.”
“I see how you look at him.” All common sense had left Acyn’s head as he let everything that had been building for years spill out. Tears, also, seemed to come spilling out as they left Acyn’s cheeks wet. He didn’t even have the sense to look away. Cas only furrowed his eyebrows, confused.
“Look at Will?”
“You love him. You love him and I see the way he looks at Kenna and you don’t even notice me.” Acyn couldn’t stop himself.
“I do not love Will. Will does not love Kenna. Are you sure you are feeling well? I can open up the window.”
“I love you.” Desperation coated his words and he immediately wished he could take it back as he watched Cas freeze. “I love you, and you don’t even notice.” The tears came quicker now, the salty water falling into his mouth and down his neck. He did not wipe them away. For Cas did it for him.
Cas took Acyn’s head in between his hands, wiped his tears, and kissed him. Hard and fast, then he pulled away. A question lingered in his eyes, one Acyn didn’t want to take the time to answer. He only leaned in again, and Cas did the same. He kissed him, slowly this time. Acyn wrapped his arms around Cas’s neck and leaned into the kiss, moving his body closer. Through his drunken haze, he could feel the release. The words he had wanted to say for so long finally slipped free, even if he hadn’t meant them to.
When they finally pulled apart, their mouths only a fraction of an inch away from each other, Cas said, “You’re drunk.”
“That does not mean I don’t mean what I say.” A faint smile tugged on Cas’s lips, but he moved away, just an inch.
“We can talk when you have sobered up a bit.” Sleep tugged Acyn into that empty darkness, and though he tried to fight it, the warmth in his chest seemed to spread through his whole body. The lightness he felt, with Cas smiling at him, looking at him, drew him into sleep. Cas put an arm behind Acyn, and let Acyn collapse into him. He murmured a sleepy goodnight before closing his eyes and let the darkness take him away.
