Her fingers traced the tiny key's features over and over. It didn't make sense. Her mom was in the kitchen doing the dishes.
There was a knock at the door and her mom asked her to get it. She set the key onto the coffee table and shuffled over to the door. She opened the door and froze. Two men stood there. Both wearing blue uniforms with red stripes and white buttons. Both were holding white hats. "Mrs. Brooks?" the man in front asked softly. Terisa didn't respond she just stood there completely frozen.
"I'm Mrs. Brooks," Terisa's mom said coming to the door. "This is my daughter…" her mom trailed off as she looked at who was standing there. "No…" Terisa heard the faint whisper.
"I'm so sorry," the man began. Terisa didn't hear anything else. Everything around her began to crumble.

The next month was a daze for Terisa. Family had been coming and going there entire time. Terisa didn't leave her room though. Her hair was a mess, and she hadn't showered in almost two weeks. She barely ate, and she knew that people were starting to worry about her.
A tiny knock on the door reached her ears and then her mom stepped in. She was holding something in her hands. "I found this on the coffee table a few weeks back," she whispered. "Is it yours?" She held out the tiny key that Terisa had.
"Yeah," Terisa replied taking the key. "It was one of my gifts."
"Do you know what it goes to?"
"No," Terisa replied bluntly. "It's not like it matters though."
"Look around sweety, I'm sure you'll find what it opens," her mom said before standing up and walking out. Closing Terisa's door behind her. Terisa looked at the key for a moment. Then she had an idea. She slid off of her bed and pulled a couple boxes out from under her bed. Then she reached all the way back and pulled one more box out. This box was a small wooden chest. It was locked with a small silver lock that she didn't have the key for.

"Why do you have to go?" Terisa asked looking up at the man next to her. They were both sitting in a huge oak tree.
"Why does a male lion leave to patrol his land?" the man asked.
"To make sure intruders don't get in and hurt his cubs and lionesses," Terisa answered.
"Well, I'm doing the same thing," he said. "I have to go and make sure that you and your mother are safe, just like the lion does."
Terisa was quiet for a moment. "But what if you get hurt?" He didn't respond. "Dad, what if you get hurt?"
"You see this key?" he asked, holding up a tiny silver key. Terisa nodded, and he pulled out a piece of string. He then tied the string to the key and secured it to the tree. "On the 6th of February, I want you to come out here and get this key okay?"
"Next year's February?" Terisa asked.
"Next year's February," he confirmed.
"What's it for?" she asked, climbing over to take a closer look at the key. There was a pretty pink jewel in the center of the bow.
"You'll see," he replied, just as he started climbing out of the tree. Terisa followed him down and they started back towards the house.

On the top of the chest was small pinkish jewel, and when Terisa compared it to the key, they matched. With a little bit of a struggle she managed to fit the tiny key into the lock. With a click the latch came loose and the lid opened a tiny amount.
She set the key down next to her and gently lifted the lid. Inside the box was a piece of folded paper, and under the paper was a beautiful necklace. It was silver. The pendant was a small silver heart with a blue sapphire heart in the middle of it. In tiny black letters on the bottom of the heart was her name. After thoroughly inspecting the necklace she turned her attention to the note that had been on top.
"Happy Birthday,
Terisa, you've grown into a beautiful young woman, with the heart of a lioness. I'm supposed to be back today, just in time for your sixteenth birthday. So if you've opened this before I'm back just know that I love you and am proud of the beautiful young lady that you have become. Please continue being the strong girl that I know you are.
Daddy."
Terisa stared at the note for a moment, before it slipped out of her fingers and onto the floor. And for the first time since she'd heard the news, she cried. Clutching the necklace in one hand and burying her face into her knees, she bawled.
One day. He had been one day away from coming home.
