I'm new to the game too but I've found a few campaigns to watch that actually explain it really well. Like D&D with high school students. https://youtu.be/52NJTUDokyk He explains how to make characters and different classes/races in the 2nd season.
Yeah, if you can't afford the books (* cough * me * cough *), Youtube is your friend.
I also like Critical Role, but they have lengthy Youtube episodes…
For books you can just look up insert book title pdf it’s illegal but oh well
(I don’t think it’s technically illegal tho unless you download it I know that’s what’s true with movies)
(If your looking for a good D&D podcasts than I will suggest "Dice, Camara, Action!".)

I use this site to access the player handbook. It should explain all of the stuff pretty well that you’re asking about, especially race and class.
As for the dice, idk everything but:
- d20 is used for skill checks
- d6 is used to roll stats
- d4, d6, d8, d10, d12 are the dice usually used for damage rolls- it varies by weapon/magic attack which one you use.
- I think d8 or d10 is usually your hit die (used to calculate hp)
Feel free to correct or contribute to what I said
