Silence filled the waiting room as Rantaro entered with a grim expression. After a gruesome accident, a young man was brought into the hospital for emergency treatment. As his car went up in flames, he sustained major burns to most of his body, and the trauma from the force of the collision caused many breaks and fractures. One of his lungs had been punctured, and his odds of survival were slim. Despite the staff's best efforts, he died during surgery. That was the news that the doctor came to deliver.

"He…didn't make it, did he?" the victim's mother asked.

Rantaro shook his head. Despite his calm disposition, he felt horrible about the lost life. He tried his best to save the patient, but there was nothing that could have been done. He had died, despite the staff's best efforts.

"I'm sorry, ma'am, but he has passed," he responded. "There was nothing that we could do to save him. Even if he had survived the surgery, there was a chance that he would never regain consciousness. He is in a better place now. I would stay to console you, but I have other patients to see."

Without another word, the green-haired doctor left the room. His statement about having other patients to get to was a lie, as his shift was supposed to end around the time the crash victim arrived. He was told to stay to help him, but now he could leave. However, at the time, he was looking for his boyfriend. He was rather upset, as he always was when a patient died in his care, but this was the first time where all he wanted to do was cry.

Thankfully, his boyfriend wasn't asked to respond to any other emergencies, so Rantaro found him pretty quickly. His expression remained fairly calm, but there were tears forming in his eyes. It was clear that something had gone wrong.

"They're dead…" he stated after a moment. "I couldn't save them…"

"it's.. it's apart of life.." he he mumbled, wiping tears away " I'm a trauma team.. I see it all the time."

Rantaro nodded in response to his boyfriend's statement, as his words were the truth, but he didn't understand why he felt that way. He knew that people were going to die sometimes, even if he wanted to save them. Usually it didn't affect him so badly, but that day was different. For some reason, he was upset about it all.

"I know, Kokichi…" he sighed softly. "I know that it's a part of life, and it's normal, but still… I've dealt with it before, too, and yet, I don't know… Something's bothering me…"

"it's not your fault either taro.." he whispered

While Rantaro knew that it wasn't his fault, he still delt bad about everything. He knew that the patient's survival was unlikely, but he still tried everything that he could to save him. Even if it wasn't his fault. some part of him felt like it was. He had lost a couple of patients before, but he had never been so heavily affected by it until that day.

"I know…but I feel like it is…" he admitted. "I feel like I could have prevented this…"

" they had a pipe go through their heart, the only reason they lived that long is because I put a balloon on both sides to slow blood loss, there was nothing that could be done…

It took a moment for Rantaro to respond, but he eventually nodded in response to the statement. While he understood that there was nothing that could have been done, a part of him still felt bad about it. Even if they knew that some of their patients would die, and they had witnessed it before, they couldn't ignore the guilt.

"I know, I know…" he sighed. "Even then, I just…feel bad, y'know?"

(Also, he/they Rantaro time because my mind started using they/them randomly)

" I know and I'm sorry.."

Rantaro quickly shook their head in response to Kokichi's apology. Even if he was apologizing because he felt bad due to the fact that his lover was upset over everything, they didn't think that it was necessary. They would get over it eventually. They had to, really.

"It's alright, Koki," he told him softly. "It's all okay… I'll be okay…"

Kokichi cuddled into his lover, sighing softly as he relaxed into Rantaro " I love you,"

Rantaro held Kokichi close to him after a moment as he tried to relax a little bit. Surely his boyfriend just wanted to see him happy again. It would explain why he was so open to cuddling into him at the time, and he appreciated that he wanted to stay close. It was comforting, really.

"I love you, too," they responded.

Kokichi moved into his lap, nestled under the other's chin "good, because I'm tired and need a nap -w-"

Rantaro simply nodded in response to Kokichi's comment before letting him cuddle closer to them. They didn't mind it, and they were aware that their boyfriend needed to sleep. Honestly, they did, too, but they didn't want to at the time, so they decided to just keep Kokichi close.

"That's fine," he responded. "Sleep a bit, please."

Kokichi nodded and nestled into Rantaro, " you need sleep too.."

Rantaro knew that he needed to sleep, but he wasn't entirely sure if he would at the time. For the time being, he was just going to keep Kokichi close to him and hope that he fell asleep after a while. At least one of the two would be getting sleep that night, even if they both needed it.

"I'll try to," they responded. "I can't promise anything, though."

"okay." He whispered as he fell asleep, he knew that Rantaro hardly ever slept, but he did love it when he held him.

Rantaro held Kokichi close to them as he slept, allowing him to sleep peacefully for a while. Even though they didn't sleep, they were glad that their boyfriend was getting some sleep. It was nice to see him at peace and sleeping, even if they weren't going to sleep that night.

Kokichi slept heavily

The next few hours passed without anything happening. Kokichi got the sleep that he needed, and Rantaro stayed awake the entire time. He tried to sleep, but it was always unsuccessful, even if he needed to sleep as well. He didn't really like being left to his thoughts, but he tried to focus on his boyfriend, which kept him distracted from the events of that night.

Kokichi would flinch in his sleep, whimpering and whining from nightmares

When Rantaro noticed that Kokichi was having a nightmare, he immediately began to shake him, and he didn't stop until he was awake. Knowing that his boyfriend was prone to having nightmares was only another reason why he stayed up more often than not.

"Koki, wake up," he requested softly. "I'm here now… It's alright…"

Kokichi flinched awake, "s..sorry.. I'm sorry .."
