Bitter thoughts swirled around Aquila as he trudged back to the house. The little group of heroes would notice their absence, eventually. Vesper would be disappointed in him. Not only had he accomplished nothing, he’d somehow managed to push Karina further away.

Karina thought about sitting in the room where the adults were. That was out of the question. That was something a weak little princess would do. Plus, her face was still a bit rosy from the crying. Her parents knew well that she never liked to shed tears and something horrible would have to happen for that. She wasn't weak. Plus… she couldn't ditch the others. They were trying to be friendly. Plus, she wanted to catch up with Caedmon. If that really had been Caedmon who Alpha had run off with that is.
