Okay so when the character was ten she was in a traumatic accident that left her in a coma for two years. When she woke up she wasn't the same anymore, she's more sad and closed off now. What kind of tragic accident would make her become like that?

Well, a serious head injury could cause any number of mental issues. Coma, amnesia, personality change, etc.
