Hi, I'm about as Italian as a bowl of borscht so I can't give you first hand experience, I can however direct you to websites like the CIA's world factbook, or UN data which, as their names imply, will give you all sorts of information about the makeup of Italy, it may not help so much for an Italian character as it would for a story set in Italy but it's probably still worth a once over.
