Hello! Okay, so basically there's a huge civilization….. on floating islands. It's kinda steampunk so they have the cool trains and rickety airships but it's kinda fantasy Renaissance era, so yeah. Anyhow, there's a city watch and stuff and my one character moves to the city and becomes part of the watch and has a mentor who is really hardcore and their spouse who is really chill and likes to knit and bake, and my MC lives with those two. But I need to A, actually come up with ideas for who those characters could be and B, come up with characters who are part of the city watch and finally C, come up with other side characters. I already have an general idea for a villain, but it still also needs work. This is a fantasy universe so there are trolls and dwarves and elves and gnomes and vampires and witches/wizards and so on, but in intend that most of my characters don't have special powers. Help!

What are you looking for in side characters?

Sounds like you have a pretty good start. Maybe start building up basic characteristics and motivations? Try ‘what made my MC move in the first place?’ You can then start building their character off of that.

What made them move was that they were tired of being cooped up in their vampire tribe and wanted to see the world. (Yes, they are a vampire) So MC had to seek out their fortune and so forth. Blah de blah. More backstory. Blah blah blah.

I don't want to steal your characters as I plan to publish, I would feel bad to wreck your life's work. So I hope you don't plan on using your own characters lmao sorry erk now it's awkward and this is a run on sentence and I really should stop typing now and….. frick.

Alrighty. So I guess you could also say, ‘What was so suffocating about the tribe?’ And just out of curiosity: why fortune? Could you develop that into something more complex?
I just realized that I’m really giving you questions lol not answers but I find that answering questions helps me build up characters.

Okay, so I intend to make my MC a strong female character THAT ACTUALLY HAS FLAWS (I'm talking to you, Rey. Stay away from that Kylo Ren boy, I don't trust him.) and stuff, I want her to be good natured but timid and easily frightened as she has never experienced a community with over 50 people. Also, even though she normally follows rules she is headstrong and sometimes bends rules to her own advantage. I want her to not have a tragic backstory. And last of all, I want her to be pretty but still quite plain looking but not ugly no offense?Not every MC has to be a hottie. (Still looking at you Rey.)

Slightly exotic, but people are still able to pronounce it. (Patrick Rothfuss, I love your books man, but how the f*ck do you pronounce Kvothe or Skoivan Schiemmelpfenneg? (I don't lie, those are actually character's names.))

Okay, well I am going to give her a boyfriend in the future, Aspen would be a good name I guess. And he isn't going to be one of those anime hot-but-brooding-and-violent boyfriends, he's going to be kind and stuff and all that mushy stuff. As I said, later on.

If you need dystopian names, or wanna change the spelling of a name to make it look prettier, try saying the names outloud with food in your mouth

e.g. Tommy = Domi, Elizabeth = Lisybit, Chris = Rith/Ryth

It's not a dystopian, it's actually a dramatic fantasy comedy. But thanks for the suggestions either way!
