To answer your question, in the original story, there were multiple balls hosted, each the night after the last, and the mysterious princess (cinderella) would show up to each one, but disappear before twelve. The Prince was tired of her running away, and he wanted to marry her, so on the third night (idk which one it actually was) he coated the palace steps in tar to catch the fleeing princess. Her shoes stuck to the tar and she went barefoot. Disney messed up the story, as always.
