It was more of a comedic moment than anything, but if I had to think of a proper answer, it'd probably be like the food fight scene, where the writers said they extended their aura to the food to stop it from breaking. So aura.
I've actually stopped trying to logic my way out of an anime when somethings strange happens. My excuse is that it's anime and pretty much anything can happen
