well its just that functions are so vast
there can be really, really complicated ones though
i think what everyone's saying is that the concept is easy
but using them takes a lot of work
try khan academy and patrickJMT on youtube for help

y= anything with an x in it
usually written as f(x) = some equation
f(x) meaning a function of x
