As an author, role player, etc, what are your thoughts on contradictions in a characters motives? Do you find them to make a character more realistic? Or, because itβs a piece of writing that should not have flaws like contradictions, does it just make you annoyed to read?

I like contradictions in characters because they should be flawed. That said, there should be a backstory or believable reason for said contradiction. One of my character's motivations is to be a hero (kinda vague, but o well) but their other motivation is to put themselves first/take care of themselves. I think this works because this character is shown to be a coward and kinda selfish, so it makes sense that his motivations contradict.
