It depends on what type of story you're writing. Personally, I tend to split my stories into three parts, a setup, conflict, and resolution, then I outline events contributing to each part. I am a pantser by nature though - I hardly ever write from outlines, or follow outlines. Maybe if you made flowcharts or a map it could help you track events and characters.
