A character gets captured and their (romantic) partner runs off. They be all betrayed and shit and then get recruited by a manipulative sociopath and powerful dark sorcerer and join team evil. Turns out they were faking the betrayal all along, and used the capture as an opportunity to get closer to the villains. They're already 20 miles away with their partner and a bunch of info on the evil people, enough to do a lot of damage, by the time team evil suspects something's up.
