Robin only stared and swayed slightly, an unusual gleam in their two-toned eyes.

“You had long hair,” I observe, looking at the photo.
She laughs as she removes another knife from the block and slips it into her bag. “I did.”
“It doesn’t seem like you.” It looks more like Lucy, thick brown locks cascading over her shoulders and down her back.
“I would have kept it,” she says, bounding past me as she crosses the room. “I loved my hair. But it’s better to have it short… Under the circumstances.”
“How old is the photo?”
“I don’t know, Taylin. Why does it matter?” I glance between her and the photo. Now Robin’s hair is cut neatly to her chin, forming neat, wiry waves around her face.
The photo doesn't look like her, at least not the her I know, and not the her I want to know. Instead, it was a strange girl I was unfamiliar with the face of, a girl that fit in with the crowd. Robin doesn't. I like that about her; Her diversity. Lucy doesn't have diversity. It's what makes Lucy Lucy and Robin Robin.

"Karma's not just a bitch. Karma is my bitch, sweetie."

"It's fine." I wasn't lying. Everything was fine, if your definition of fine is losing your friends, almost dying, and being forced to ally with someone you hate.

"Yikes, I think a ran someone over," Vicente got out the car to examine what was in front of him then shook his head. "Nevermind, it's just Shen. No one important."

The girl screamed, the sound barely audible among the battle that raged in what used to the lobby of the school. She cradled the boy's head on her lap, sobbing. A spear had stabbed through his shoulder and the point came out just below his ribs.

Jackie suddenly recognized them. They were siblings, Southies, they both got good grades, they were nice kids. He was much younger than her, from class three. She was the year below Jackie in class nine.

The girl pulled the small body closer, hugging him to her chest. He was alive, but barely. Life hanging on by a thread.

"If you don't get off me right now, I will turn into a dwarf-eating tarantula."

"Oh, I don't lie. I simply say I plan to do something, make it seem absolute that that is my plan, CONFIRM to you that that is my plan, and then? I go and do the exact opposite." Ethan grinned at his furious roommates. Sure, worst time for a quip, but then again they had chosen to live with Ethan so this was technically their mess too.

"I will pull your spinal cord out from your mouth if you keep ogling my brother."

Stubbornly, the members of the Oru remained standing and she gently touched each of their shoulders as she passed them, a loving and thankful pat, that had the soldiers standing taller despite the tears that tracked down their faces.
