I’ve previously written instrumental-only pieces. I more recently wrote a song with lyrics but I’m not super comfortable with it.

I mainly write for piano, and I’ve written a couple of duets. One was trombone and piano, one was violin/flute and piano, and I started on a piano duet but lemme just say, that’s difficult.
My vocal songs are accompanied by ukulele.

dannggg, how long have you been writing songs? Id killl to be able to write like a good mmelody and have good harmonies with instruments, i think thats so sick. i need to learn soon honestly so that i can finish my lyrics

thats cooll, im trying to imprrove my singing voice for the songs i have. it sucks because i want my voice to be able to fit in a multitude of genres but thats like, not how it works sometimes

I’ve been writing since I was like 8. I’m 20 now. Not to say my stuff from back then is good, but I’ve been messing around for years.

That’s a mood. I sing too, but I have a deep voice that doesn’t fit some of the stuff I want to write.

@icecubes

you must have a lottt of experience then. are you good at like music theory and stuff or at least like keys?
and I FEELLL YOUUUUUU im so bad at singing high notes and also just, having a certain tone…. sucskkkskskfksj

Yeah, I’ve had a lot of training in music theory (and I took AP music theory in high school for my own amusement to fill up an empty class slot). Plus I think piano is one of the most helpful instruments to know in writing music.

@icecubes

dangg that must help, i definitely dont have any knowledge in music theory but i want to learn more so i can make like actual good songs. i only know like bare minimum stuff from taking choir. and yeah, i do have piano but im SOO on and off about learning to play it. piano is really beautiful though.

I mean, you don't need music theory training to write music, but it definitely helps some.
And piano, even if you don't play much, is at least helpful so you can hear how a bunch of different notes sound together.

The only song I've written is where I just switched out some of the lyrics and made it have a different meaning and stuff

I write poems about Minecraft that can be songs.

So I guess I’ll talk a little about my approach. I use a melody-based approach. Basically I mess around with melodies until something sticks- until I find something catchy and memorable. This is especially true of my instrumental music. One of the criteria for a “good composition” according to my AP theory course was “having a singable melody.” I interpret this in the sense of having a melody you want to sing along with, even if the song has no words. It’s a pretty subjective criteria, but it’s definitely the thing that’s helped me the most.

i knowww but it makes things easier when i know what sounds good like,,,, scientifical theoryily
and you are so right

also, that makes sense, but i also want to try to make melodies that wont be confused with other songs, like original ones

@Hybrid-Is-tired

ooh I too play the songs!
