Strange/Unexpected Writing Tips?

I'll start out with some of mine:

  • While you're writing, switch the font to Comic Sans! Sounds crazy, but I saw something about it somewhere and gave it a try anyway. It's very easy on the eyes and kind of helps flow for me.
  • I also read somewhere that you should write the dialogue in a scene first, and then the actions. I'm not sure how I feel about this one. I haven't tried it yet because I'm skeptical, but if anyone else has tried it, let me know how it works!
  • Go ahead and outline, maybe even write your final scene. I read this one somewhere too… I'm trying it, and what I got out of it was this: it helps you establish an endpoint. I'm not 100% sure how to feel about it yet, but I can see where they're coming from.

No matter how tired you are, don't take cold medicine before writing. It seems like a good idea, because obviously if your cold is suppressed, you'll be able to write better. It is not. You will need. To edit. So, so much. In fact, most scenes I've written while on DayQuil have just gone straight in the trash. They were…. not usable.
In conclusion, don't drug yourself before writing.

1) When you don't feel like writing, edit instead.
2) Doodle your ideas, even if you can't draw for shit.
3) Read everything you can about the topics in your book. Make being an expert your second hobby.
4) Use those textpost memes to help figure out the dynamics of your characters.
5) Make a mood playlist for your book, chapter, character(s), etc.
6) Read lots of good writing and ponder why you enjoy it so much, and what makes it a good book.
7) Alternatively, read some bad writing and observe what can ruin a story.
8) Write something everyday, even if it's bullshit.
9) Sort your characters into Hogwarts Houses.
10) Come up with creative titles for every chapter.
11) Make a list of things you absolutely have to have in your work, be it a scene, funny snippet of dialogue, or a super dramatic moment.
12) Find out what inspires you to write (for me, it's Marvel Movies) and interact with it a bunch.
13) Find writer buddies who can encourage you.
14) Before you post a new chapter, change the font to something completely different, then edit it. You'll find your mistakes much easier.
15) Remember that you made a thing today, and that's like half the battle right there
