Readings books on the saints as a kid is interesting because they don't really pull punches. Like, you'll be reading about one and getting invested and then the story will be like "oh yeah and then they were skinned alive"
yeah, when i read about Saint Lucia of Syracuse it was like "she prayed a lot and took vows of chastity" and then "she was forced to be a prostitute so she plucked her eyes out"
heck, if op is okay with it i would love to stalk that, i love reading about saints and i feel like that'd be super cool to know about for writing catholic/protestant characters
No offense to anyone. But Catholics and Protestants are basically opposites. If there is a Catholic thing, Protestants are probably telling their kids it’s evil. (Okay most don’t but there are some.) Catholics do saints. So Protestants say it’s idolatry.

Do Protestants do Mary? I've heard the whole "lol you guys worship Mary!!!" thing before and it's not true, Catholics don't worship Mary but we do pray through her more.
It all started when (no offense just what I learned in history and from my mom who was a convert from being a Muslim) the Pope started exercising power he didn’t have, and the church split into pope supporters (Catholics) and down-with-the-pope…ers (Orthodox). Also there was that thing before with the Coptics but no one talks about that so I still can’t explain it. Fast forward several years to the Black Plague. By now most everyone has forgotten the Orthodox exist. (Seriously. Americans just found out they existed like five years ago when a famous televangelist or something converted.) The Catholic Church is being pretty nice and caring for the dying except for the lame ones. Fast forward to after plague and we have the problem of a severely corrupt Catholic church. That’s bc the nice ones died from plague. That’s when Luther stepped in. He was fed up. So he did the equivalent of posting a rant on Twitter by nailing his famous 95 Theses to a church door to talk about how much the Catholic Church sucked. The pope at the time was kind of like “U right” and decided Luther should get to chat with him. Our bro the pope chilled with Luther and agreed that lots of stuff sucked and they should really get on that but was also like “you gotta cool it a bit son bc not everything you said is right”. Then Luther got pissy, called pope the Antichrist and started his own church. And then it was like an avalanche and now we have a million factions of Christianity.

partially because i generally have only written characters with similar views to myself (atheist/agnostic, maybe with some family ties to religion) and want to try accurately portraying something different, and partially because i thought it would be interesting to contrast with the theme of the novel– personal identity, and the aesthetic– american consumerism, creepy road trip style.

I'm agnostic, but I grew up Protestant- specifically Methodist. I've also attended Baptist and Nondenominational churches before. I was religious until like 16-17, so I might be able to answer some questions, or type out an explanation.

between, i guess? she's grown up in a very religious family, and has a good relationship with them for the most part. but she also drinks loads on occasion, is gay (very repressed), and has experiences with these weird haunted things that religion doesn't exactly justify lmao

Probably a chill Catholic then? Also gotta talk more on the Not Gay if that’s gonna be a thing.
As for religion not justifying it’s either a Holy Thing or a Demon Thing pretty much.
