I looked from Juliet’s message to her face several times. Back and forth.

…what kind of dancing?

Lyrical, jazz, musical theatre.

I shrugged.

The usual.

I’m used to dancing at parties. Pretty coordinated though. As long as I get steps to follow I’ll be fine.

I’m sure you’ll do great, don’t worry about a thing. The theme of the year’s being announced at the Halloween dance, by the way.

I have to ask someone out for that. What a pain.

Juliet winced noticeably.

Right… I guess I’d go with Matt,

We should sneak out during it and have a slow dance together

I sighed audibly, wanting desperately to go with Juliet.

I would love that… but where would we sneak to?

A sharp pang of longing speared me through the heart. If only things were simpler…

Who are you going to ask to the dance?

I don’t know. Whichever girl thinks she’s in love with me at the time.

What about Rosaline? I centred tentatively, though the thought filled me with bitter, burning envy.

I stared at her message for a moment.

All my friends think I'm dating a girl from another school. If I went with Rosaline they’d definitely think I’m cheating.

I chewed my lip as I thought.

Let me know if you hear any girls swooning over me so I can swoop in.

I drew a little winking face beside the sentence.

Speaking of which, who are you going with, and how many times can I starta fight with him?

I cracked my knuckle for emphasis.

I already said. Probably Matteo. Unless he asks his crush, in which case I’ll go with Joe or Andreas. And you’re not allowed to start any fights with either.

I raised a teasing eyebrow.

I mimicked her expression playfully.

Then I won’t hesitate to ignore and deprive you of kisses for the whole day.

I pretended to reach over her for a pen, subtly squeezing her hand when I was sure no one was looking,

I grinned hugely, giving him a quick squeeze in return.

Oh, I would. Don’t test me.

Fine. No fights.

I felt my heart swell as she squeezed my hand back.

How much longer until I get to kiss you again?

Last bell. Or…. we could skip. Next period. Take the bus down to Reynard, then the underground to the edge of town.

Will Angelo find out if you skip?

I wanted Juliet to myself, but her safety will always be top priority.

Honestly? I have no idea, neither do I particularly care. Will your parents find out?

I don’t know either. Maybe we should we wait until after school. Getting in trouble is just going to make it even harder to sneak out and see each other.

It took me awhile to scribble this out legibly. Writing with my right hand is still a struggle even though it’s been almost a month.

I sighed slowly, giving a small nod. He was right, of course.

I guess…. Yeah.

I smiled at her hesitation.

In answer to that, I wrote four simple words.

I drew a heart in reply, stealing a glance at Juliet.

Now we just had to play the waiting game until school ended.
