“Amazing and terrifying. I feel like my heart’s going to beat right through my chest when I’m with you.” I squeezed her hand, happy to be in her presence.
I rolled onto my side, pressing my nose up against his uninjured arm. "Cuddle me?" The request was soft-spoken, almost shy, which had once been a rarity for me. Now, I seemed to be doing it much more often…
“You don’t even have to ask.” I tangled our legs together, pulling Juliet close to my chest. I allowed myself to take in her scent and relax on the soft blankets.
"Thank you…." God, it felt so good, to be with him like this. Alone. Uninterrupted. Just the two of us together, where nothing else mattered.
“I wish I could run away with you.” The words I’d been holding back slipped through my lips as I held Juliet close to me. The thought of letting go, being torn from her again, it was too much to bear at the moment.
I went rigid in his arms. "You know that's not possible…." Volume dipping drastically, I swallowed the knot in my throat. "We'll get caught. I'll slow you down. We'll—We'll—We could die."
I didn’t respond. I couldn’t trust my voice to handle a topic as delicate as this. I just held her closer, whispering a soft “I love you.” to Juliet to comfort myself.
"Romeo, talk to me about this," I pleaded, lifting his chin and forcing him to meet my eyes. "Take a deep breath, and talk."
I stared at Juliet, taking deep, shaky breaths to try and calm myself. Even so, my voice came out as a faint whisper. “I hate having to hide to see you. I hate this war, Juliet. I just want us to be happy…”
"I want that too," I insisted, voice wobbling dangerously. "But I'm not trading your life for our freedom."
“What if I found a safe way out?” I continued to press, desperate for the fantasy life I wanted with Juliet. A cottage on the country side. A rose garden, a few kids running around, maybe a dog or two. But most importantly, Juliet with a golden smile, her hair gently flowing with the breeze.
"Like what?" It didn't exist, and we both knew it. We were chained down—running would only lead to death.
“I don’t know yet, but what if I did? Would you go with me?” I asked, my voice shaking with desperation.
"I—I don't know." I looked away, bracing myself for his disappointment. "Of course I'd want to, but…. Marina. Joe. Matt. Jamie. Andreas."
I nodded silently. All I had here was Juliet and Mercutio. But Juliet, she had so many more people. It was easy to forget when I had to avoid all of them or risk death. “Can you hug me a little tighter?” I asked softly.
"I'm sorry…." My voice broke as I tightened my arms around him. "I'm so sorry…."
“Don’t apologize.” I did my best to keep the pain out of my voice, but it still sounded strained. “I’m just happy I have you right now.”
“I’m chaining you down,” I whispered into his chest, voice choked with emotion. “I’m keeping you here…”
“No. You’re not. I’m choosing to stay, Juliet.” I whispered, rubbing circles into her back. “I love you, okay? More than anything.”
“But you’re not choosing.” I swallowed thickly, squeezing my eyes shut. “If I didn’t exist, you’d be free.”
“If you didn’t exist I’d still be rotting in my room. You’re the one giving me the courage to even consider something like this.” I assured her quickly. “I don’t want to live in a world without you.”
“Better to live in a world without me than not live at all.” Suddenly, I pulled away and got off the bed, crossing the room to my desk and picking up an untouched file. Slowly, I returned to Romeo and place it into his hands.
“Before I open this…” I set the file aside, pulling Juliet closer to me. I pressed my lips to hers, kissing her deeply.
The kiss caught me completely off guard. I stumbled forward, half in his lap by the time I managed to steady myself. But my mouth never left his, not once.
I pulled away, heavily panting. “My name could be in that file and I wouldn’t care, okay? I love you. And Id rather not live in this world at all than live through it without you.”
I squeezed my eyes shut, taking a shuddering breath in. “Your name isn’t in the file. Yet. But I’m scared for when…. for when it will be.”
