Sterling’s POV:
I snorted and rolled my eyes, shooting her an amused look. “I was joking about that, babe. I just meant that we’re legally free of our parents and their households after we turn eighteen.”
Sterling’s POV:
I snorted and rolled my eyes, shooting her an amused look. “I was joking about that, babe. I just meant that we’re legally free of our parents and their households after we turn eighteen.”
Eden’s POV:
I frowned.
“I meant it as a joke, too,” I defended myself, crossing my arms. “You said it was the number of freedom. That’s why I connected it to Steve Rodgers, because he believes in freedom.” I shook my head. “How old are you?”
Sterling’s POV:
(When your author forgets that you’re 18, not 17…)
I smiled over at her, pulling into the parking lot of the restaurant. “Eighteen,” I said, somewhat sheepishly. “And you’re the same age, correct?”
Eden’s POV:
I nodded.
“I am,” I said quietly. “Luke and I were born a little late. My parents thought we’d be disabled, because that’s what the doctor said. Still, mom and dad didn’t give up on Luke and I. Aunt Willow and uncle Leo tell me the day we were born was the best day of mom and dad’s life. We were healthy, save for the poor eyesight we both had.”
Uncle Leo asked me to keep this a secret, but he said dad cried a lot when Luke and I were born. My parents, despite being in stress, never gave up on us. Even through hardships, they still thought of us as their perfect children. I would do anything to protect my family, to never disappoint them and leave them behind.
Sterling’s POV:
Oh. Oh, wow… I had no idea her parents had gone through that, that she and Lucas might not have been healthy…
I parked the car and simply sat there for a moment, chewing on my lip. Finally, I looked over at Eden, taking her hand in mine, playing with her fingers absentmindedly.
“I had no idea…” I murmured, reaching up and tracing the skin around her eyes lightly. “I’m glad you’re okay. I’m glad you’re who you are today… Eden… May I ask you a question?”
Eden’s POV:
It wasn’t something I considered an emotional topic. It is what it is. There wasn’t anything wrong with my brother and I, so there wasn’t any reason to be emotional about it.
Still, telling Sterling this made me feel another walk breaking inside of me. It felt like we were getting closer.
“Eden… may I ask you a question?”
Now, honestly, please, if you want to ask someone something, do not ask them if you can ask a question. It gives a feeling akin to a heart attack.
I nodded slowly, turning towards Sterling with a frown on my face.
Sterling's POV:
I chewed on my lip for a moment. This was big. Not super big, but it was incredibly important to me. So, taking a deep breath, I went for it.
"I know we've made out countless times, and we've certainly gotten closer. But we never actually made it official, never made us official… So, Eden McArthur, would you do me the honor of being my girlfriend?" I asked, searching her eyes hopefully.
Eden’s POV:
I’d like to say my heart didn’t feeling jumping out of my chest, but I would be lying, because it felt like it. My heart swelled, and I inhaled deeply, closing my eyes, draping my arm over them.
“Yes,” I whispered. “Did you really think I’d say no, Sterling?”
Sterling’s POV:
I chuckled a bit, releasing some of my nervousness. “I’d certainly hoped you wouldn’t. And I’m glad that you said yes,” I said softly, reaching over to move her arm so that I could see her eyes again. “C’mere, babe.”
Eden’s POV:
I obliged, shifting so I was looking at him.
“I’m going to be very hard to handle,” I told him quietly.
Sterling’s POV:
“I think that’s a challenge I’m willing to accept,” I said with a small smirk before leaning forward and connecting out lips gently.
Eden's POV:
My eyes fluttered closed, my lips moving slowly against Sterling's; although the kiss wasn't as heated as the previous ones we shared, it was still enough to send shivers down my spine. I was truly falling for Sterling, and although it was a thrill, it also scared me.
"It will be hard," I murmured against his lips, the pair I'd gotten so used to yet not at the same time. I was addicted to the feeling of his lips, the way they pressed against mine.
Sterling’s POV:
“That’s okay… I’m willing to work for this,” I murmured before pulling away. “As much as I love kissing you, we should really head inside.”
Eden's POV:
The second Sterling pulled away, a whine escaped my lips. I hoped he wouldn't notice, but it was audible. It sounded audible. My cheeks burned heavily and I groaned, hiding my face in my hands. What was Sterling doing to me? I don't remember the last time I was like this. Kissing Aaron wasn't something that left me like this–desperate, the want for more. It was different with Sterling. And different was terrifying.
Sterling’s POV:
Did she just…? Woah. Okay…
I couldn’t keep the grin from my face when I heard her little whine. I had no idea why that made me feel so good, but it did. And the blush on her cheeks was just adorable.
“Sorry, sweetheart, but we’ll have plenty of time to continue this later,” I teased her, opening my door to step outside.
Eden’s POV:
I glared at Sterling before getting out of the car, closing the door behind me. I didn’t know what was happening to me. What was wrong with me? I thought I could control myself but it was getting harder to do so, especially when kissing Sterling made the desperation get worse instead of eliminating it.
“Shut up,” I glowered at Sterling, arms crossed.
Sterling’s POV:
I clicked my tongue, shaking my head at her in mock disappointment. “Make me,” I said, tossing her a wink before opening the door to the restaurant for her.
Eden’s POV:
I didn’t answer Sterling every time he tried talking to me. I was that petty currently. He deserved it for being like that with me.
I turned the page from the menu, my eyes skimming across the different types of foods. I didn’t know what I could get. I would just settle for a burger or some pasta, but for now, I couldn’t find it. I wasn’t a big fan of steak, either.
Sterling’s POV:
My eyes continued to flash up to look at Eden as she skimmed through the menu. How many times had she gone through it? Had she still not found something she’d like? Maybe I should have just taken her somewhere that wasn’t quite so nice…
“See anything you’d like?” I wondered quietly, wanting desperately to reach across and take her hand. I wouldn’t, though. I couldn’t tell what she was feeling right now, and it was throwing me off a little. Best to stay on the side of caution.
Eden’s POV:
I finally looked up, meeting Sterling’s eyes as he looked at me. He looked like he was being cautious and it took a lot out of me to not smile.
My eyes flickered to his mouth before I looked up at him again as if I did nothing.
“Yes,” I answered, resting my cheek on my hand. “I do. But I’m not sure I’ll be able to get it.”
Sterling’s POV:
My lips twitched up in a quick smile as I noticed where her eyes flickered to, knowing she was trying to tease me. “Get whatever you want. It’s on me.”
Eden’s POV:
I quirked an eyebrow, a coy smile on my features.
“But what I want isn’t something I can get in a restaurant,” I replied casually.
Sterling’s POV:
I smirked, leaning forward on the table. “Oh? And why is that?”
Eden’s POV:
I raised an eyebrow, leaning back on my seat, arms crossed.
“Because that want is something only you can give me,” I said innocently, tilting my head to the side.
Sterling’s POV:
My eyes flickered between her eyes and her lips. “Hm. We could just leave… There was another place I wanted to take you, anyway…”
Eden’s POV:
I couldn’t believe he fell for it. I tried to keep the smile off of my face.
“But I haven’t told you what I want,” I said, shifting slightly.
Sterling’s POV:
I sighed and raised an eyebrow at her. “Okay… What do you want?”
Eden’s POV:
I leaned forward, resting my chin on the back of my hand, a serious look on my face.
“Could you please…” I trailed off, chewing my lower lip before continuing. “Do what you want to do without thinking it’ll offend me, especially if it’s something I’m not likely to get offended at?”
Sterling’s POV:
I grinned, letting out a quick, fairly loud laugh. “Of course. I’m sorry, I’m just not always sure what you won’t want me to do and when.”
Eden’s POV:
I reached over to clasp his hand in mine tightly.
“And that’s one of the things I like about you,” I said softly. “You’re always thinking about me before yourself. The only time I won’t want you to kiss me and the likes is when you’ve been a jerk. If I don’t want to go any further, I can stop you. I know I’m holding back, and I’m trying not to because I want to give you my all, so you shouldn’t hold yourself back, either.”
