Silas hummed at her, standing up as well. He offered her a smile.
"We'll see," he said smoothly. "It was a pleasant lunch."
"Now if you'll excuse us—" Arvil reached for Daisy's hand—"we'll be taking our leave."
Silas hummed at her, standing up as well. He offered her a smile.
"We'll see," he said smoothly. "It was a pleasant lunch."
"Now if you'll excuse us—" Arvil reached for Daisy's hand—"we'll be taking our leave."
Daisy glanced briefly at the hand Arvil reached out to her, and she took it gently. She gave him a tiny smile before turning to Silas again.
“I’m sure I’ll see you later,” she said in a murmur.
Arvil guided her out of the restaurant, still keeping up with the acting. He looked at her and smiled.
"Did you drive here, or did you get a cab?" he questioned. "Because if you got a cab, we can still go for coffee. I have about ten more minutes before I need to get back to work."
“I don't think ten minutes is enough time to get coffee,” Daisy mused, shaking her head. “And I did drive, so I guess we’ll have to get that coffee another time.”
Arvil let out a chuckle, bringing her hand to his mouth so he could give it a small kiss.
"Drive safely," he said to her as he let go of her hand. "Text me when you get home. I will see you soon, Daisy."
Daisy nodded once, pausing before she stepped slightly closer to her. “Thank you,” she murmured. “For this.”
"You aren't the only one getting something out of it," Arvil responded with a shrug. "But you're welcome. Women shouldn't be forced into a marriage and be expected to drop their jobs."
Daisy lips quirked up into a small smile, and she nodded again. “I’ll see you soon, then, I suppose. I’ll make sure to let you know when I arrive home,” she added, her lips twisting up playfully.
Arvil chuckled and nodded, stuffing his hands in his pockets.
"See you later," he said, turning around to walk to his car. This went well. Hopefully, things would continue to run this smoothly
“Goodbye, Arvil,” Daisy said, taking a step back before turning around. Hopefully, this would go well. This mess could pass soon.
[TIME SKIP: A DAY]
Honestly, there was nothing more Lilly liked to do than hoard her boyfriend all day, even at work. It wasn't like he minded it, anyway.
Today, she was sprawled on his table as he did his work, though all she wanted was for him to do her instead. Oh, well.
"Has Daisy talked Arvil again?" Jordan finally questioned, not looking up from his computer screen. Lilly gave up trying to look sexy. "If not, tell her to get her butt over here with some food for her boyfriend, otherwise this wouldn't work."
Lilly stuck out her tongue at him, but slipped out her phone. "I'll call her. I don't think she has, though. She didn't tell me anything."
She quickly went to her contacts and tapped on her number, then waited for her best friend to pick up the phone.
One of the benefits of working for the Oakgate News was that they let their employees work from home sometimes. All they needed was their notes and a computer, anyway, and working from home sometimes was less distracting for some people.
Daisy was taking advantage of that opportunity when she heard her phone ring. She quickly looked up from her computer before glancing around for the phone. Finding it, she shook her head when she read Lilly’s name on the screen.
“What’s up?” she answered.
Lilly let out a groan when Jordan rested one of his hands on her thigh, but she couldn't screech at him because in that instant, Daisy picked up the phone. She chose to glare at her boyfriend instead.
"No 'how are you, Lil?' or 'we haven't talked in a while! Let's hang out!'?" she scowled, then huffed. "My dear boyfriend wants to know if you've made contact with your fake boyfriend recently."
Daisy snorted, shaking her head at her friend’s response. Of course she would take a casual greeting that way. The girl was ridiculous sometimes, but Daisy loved her all the same.
“One, I greeted you like a normal person would their best friend. Two, no, I have not. I figured he would call me first,” she replied with a smile.
"You asked me 'what's up!'" Lilly huffed, twisting so she was on her stomach. "That is not how you greet your beautiful, amazing goddess of a best friend."
Beside her, Jordan snorted. Hah, guess who's not going to receive fluff from his girlfriend anymore? That's right; Jordan!
"Jordan thinks you should visit him in office. Bring him lunch, just to sell more of the idea. Come out of that lonesome shell of being boyfriendless for an eternity," she said. "Jordan'll let the receptionist know to let you come right up."
“Well, I’m sorry, Lil, but that’s how I’ve greeted you since we were younger,” Daisy laughed, curling her legs up onto the couch where she sat. “Bring him lunch? I suppose I could do that… Shouldn’t I let him know what I’m doing first, though?”
"Nah, just let him get surprised," Lilly waved her hand, though Daisy couldn't see her. She rolled over so that now, she was sitting. "He'll probably just be consumed by that new game he's making. He's a workaholic."
Daisy hummed, nodding slowly even though she knew Lilly couldn’t see her. “All right… I guess I could do that. What does he like? What should I bring him?”
"Uh, I think he's more into pasta, soup, or fast food in general," she replied. "I'm not sure. He's not a very picky eater, I think."
“Helpful,” Daisy muttered with a good-natured roll of her eyes. “Okay, I’ll see what I can do, I guess. Thanks for the idea.”
"I am filled with good ideas," she boasted. "Maybe I'll see you when you bring him lunch. Good luck! And keep your hands to yourself."
“Trust me, Lilly, I am the last person you have to say that to. You should know that by now,” Daisy chuckled. “And why would I see you if I brought him food?”
"Hey, I'm not the one who has been touch-deprived for years," Lilly said with a laugh, slapping Jordan's hand away, who scowled. "Because my boyfriend is his vice president and I'm currently lounging on said boyfriend's desk because I don't have work today?"
“Haha. Thanks. What a wonderful friend you are, bragging about your relationship status,” Daisy drawled, rolling her eyes. “You’re seriously just on his desk while he’s working? I feel like that would be considered a distraction.”
Lilly let out a chuckle. "You're so blessed to have a friend like me," she crooned, twirling her hair around her finger. "And I'd better damn well be a distraction. But he's too absorbed in his computer to pay me any notice, which means he won't be getting anything from me."
When Jordan shot her a look, she sent him a wink.
Daisy snorted. “Sure, Lil. I pity your poor boyfriend. He must be so tortured.”
"Don't pity him," she crossed one leg over the other. "He deserves it. Anyway, you should get going!"
“At least warn him that I’m coming,” Daisy laughed, saving her work and closing her laptop. “Please? I don’t want to freak him out.”
"All right," Lilly chuckled, tucking a lock of hair behind her ear. "We'll let him know."
“Thanks. I’ll be there soon. I’ll try to stop and say hi while I’m there,” Daisy said as she packed her things up.
