She almost pouted. "Dessert's the best part of the meal," she pointed out. She pushed herself away from the counter and located a bottle of whiskey. "Since I don't get dessert first, I'll have a drink." She had noticed for the past few…weeks, maybe months? Or even perhaps years, that it had been growing increasingly harder to get through an entire day without a drink.

"What part of drinking will make up for not getting dessert first?" He asked, thoroughly confused by her second sentence, but he gazed at her warily as she poured herself a glass of whiskey.
"Maybe you should lay off the drink for tonight. I'll make dessert now, how about that?" He proposed, really not wanting her to drink.

Nyir continued to pour her drink. "I'm just teasing. I was likely going to have a drink anyway. It's just one." She cast a long look at him, unabashedly studying him. "Does it bother you?"

James itched the back of his head, looking pretty uncomfortable as he poked at the chicken. "I mean… I'd rather if you didn't drink, is all," He meekly answered with an equally as meek smile.

@WriteOutofTime

"Oh," she said, mildly surprised. She looked down at the whiskey glass in her hand. She hadn't really picked up the habit until after her boyfriend died. She'd never really thought about the quantity that she drank. "Can I ask why?"

James shrugged and glanced down at his feet with a soft sigh. "I just… don't really like how it makes you act. I like you when you're not drunk. When you're drunk, you seem just… too happy. But I like making you smile without it," He mumbled the last bit, shuffling his feet.

@WriteOutofTime

Nyir blinked. "That's…the most surprisingly sweet thing anyone's said to me in a while," she snorted. She twisted her lips, considering. She had the self-control, she was decently certain. With a nod, she placed the glass into the sink. "Fine, I suppose I'll lay off for a while."

James grinned a little at her decision, nodding happily. "Thank you! I really mean it, too. I like talking to you when you're sober. We have a lot of nice conversation. Anyway– um… what type of dessert would you like?"

@WriteOutofTime

Nyir smiled softly, glancing away. "I'm happy with anything sweet and baked."

"Awww, come on, you have to have an opinion," James gently protested as he pulled eggs out of the bags.

@WriteOutofTime

Nyir shrugged her shoulders, watching him. "Maybe chocolate cake? Or brownies. Or fudge. It's gotta be something better than whiskey, remember?"

“So something with chocolate in it?” James gently prompted as he pulled chocolate chips from the cabinet.

@WriteOutofTime

"Sure, chocolate," she said with a laugh. "Great solve, Sherlock." At the confusion on his face, she drew back the statement. "Remind me to introduce you to Sherlock Holmes at some point."

James shrugged at her suggestion and just went to his cooking, melting the chocolate chips in a pot next to the chicken. "I'll make it. Do you want me to show you how to make home made brownies?"

@WriteOutofTime

A drifting memory of her and someone entirely different flooded her mind –an image of the two of them, laughing and burning caramel, trying to make a cake together. She shook that thought away with another of her distant, wry smirks. "Hm, I guess it wouldn't hurt to learn. Brownie-making is a skill I consider vital."

James watched her with slight concern on his face, but just turned to mix the quickly melting chocolate. “Alright. Come here, then. I just set some of this to melt. But we need flour and sugar. He pushed the big bowl he got out into her arms. “You grabbed some, and I think I put them away in the cabinet next to the fridge.”

@WriteOutofTime

"Right," she said, wandering over to the cabinet and pulling out the ingredients he asked for. Placing her fingers on the top of the flour bag, she tried to pry it apart, only to tear it. Flour burst out of the top and flew into the air "This is why I don't cook," she said, turning around to face him with flour all over her hair and nose.

"No– not like tha–!" James tried to intervene, then burst out into laughter at her flour covered face, covering his mouth as he laughed.
"You're so funny, you know. Here, I need a couple cups of flour." He handed her a measuring cup.

@WriteOutofTime

Nyir sighed, rubbing her nose with the back of her hand. "So glad I could provide entertainment," she said with a wry, amused smirk. She took the cup measure from him, their fingers brushing lightly as she did so. Blinking, she turned away, dipping into the flour. "How many? Two?" she managed.

James returned her smirk with a bright smile, one that always seemed to light up a room, no matter how dark it was. "You did entertain me! I appreciate it a whole lot. And yes, two." He turned back to the stove and mixed the melting chips, humming happily.

@WriteOutofTime

She sloppily dumped two cups of flour into the bowl. Flour delicately coated the counter, but the majority got into the bowl. "I've earned chocolate," she demanded, grabbing a spoon and heading over to the stove. She dipped her spoon into the melting chocolate and then licked it off happily. A grin that rivaled even her drunkest, sloppiest smiles came to her face. "Delicious."

James watched in amusement, smiling warmly. But he soon started to protest when she came over with a spoon, but let it go at her dorky grin, allowing it to melt away his misgivings with the spoon. It was only a little bit of it.
"Alright, now we need sugar." He grabbed up the bag of sugar and handed it over. "We need one cup."

@WriteOutofTime

"I can do that," she said, grabbing the sugar and opening it –carefully, of course. This time she didn't spill anything. She scooped out a cup of sugar, and then took a pinch of it and sprinkled it into her mouth. "I may end up eating all of the ingredients instead of the actual dessert," she laughed.

James watched as he mixed the chocolate up, smiling warmly. He pulled out a couple eggs and a stick of butter. "I don't think you wanna eat some eggs or butter. That wouldn't be good." He whisked up the eggs and put the butter in to melt.

@WriteOutofTime

"You say that now, but you underestimate my impatience," she said mischievously, "I actually used to eat butter as a kid. My mom had to hide it after a while because I wouldn't stop and she thought it was gross."

"Oof that is gross," James affirmed her mom's actions, but smiled warmly at her anyway. She seemed to be having a good time, passing her memories to him by story. It was quite nice to see her laugh and smile.

@WriteOutofTime

She shook her head, rolling her eyes playfully. "It was good, I have no regrets." She looked over at the melted chocolate and melted better. "So, what next?"
