A Joyous Occasion – the King has married a commoner girl!
To appease the public, the King of Versia selected a beautiful common girl from among the masses to marry. It seemed like a fairytale to everyone except the girl. She was consistently ignored by the king, who had constant affairs with other royal women, and eventually, she begins to confide in one of her guards. Slowly, illogically, she begins falling for him.
I'd like to be the queen ;)

Eleanor strolled the castle's corridors, trailing a finger along the stone walls. Most people saw it as protection, and Eleanor used to see it that way too. Now she knew better to see it as it truly was – a prison. She sighed, and her emerald green dress dragged behind her as she walked.

Edmund haphazardly made his rounds of the castle, still having to get adjusted to the incredibly contrasting scenery, compared to his home back in the village. His parents had sold him into servitude, of course, with nothing to contribute and a guard-looking physique, it was a perfect sale.
Edmund sighed, pursing his lips to keep from reminiscing on what could have been, when he was approached by his trainer.
"Kid, We're assigning you to the queen. Get to her quarters now." He barked in his usual emotionless and terrifying voice.
Edmund complied, he had to, of course, while he scrambled off toward the royal quarters. The queen? He thought, hsi heart leaping in his chest. Perhaps this my work out after all

Eleanor seated herself by the window and gazed out on the streets she used to live on. It had been hell, but somehow in here, it was worse. She never saw the king – they even had separate bedrooms – and what she did know of him was very little. What she did know was this: when she woke every morning, she could hear the sounds of the gates being opened and closed for the girl who had spent the night. She sighed and propped her chin on her palm.
Edmund continued his search, still unfamiliar with the intricate halls and pathways. A nearby gate let out the king's newest "entertainment", and Edmund watched as the giddy girl left the castle. He sighed, feeling terrible for the queen. It has been so long since she was given any attention. Edmund knew the feeling of abandonment, wondering if his new station was perhaps… meant to be.
He knocked on her door, once he found it, and cleared his throat. "Y-your highness?"

Eleanor was busy watching the girl leave. She sighed, remembering the first few days after their wedding when the king treated her like she was gold. Now, she had been discarded like trash – essentially locked away in her room and brought out when he needed to look good for the people. She was a walking, breathing reminder. The king cared for his people. He even stooped to marrying one. Eleanor was special, a token girl.
The young woman was lost in her thoughts, and she jumped slightly as someone cleared his throat behind her. She slowly turned and her soft hazel eyes took in his appearance. "Hello," she greeted quietly. Being soft-spoken was something she was used to, and now that she was locked away without any social interaction other than her few servants, it had gotten worse. "Who are you?"
Edmund bowed quickly, leaning to show his respect, but mostly to avert his shy eyes from the elegant woman.
"M-My name is Edmund. I-I-I am informing you that I am now your guard, and anything thou needest I shall get it to you." He stammered, trying his hardest to look good enough for her

Eleanor nodded. "Alright. Thank you," she replied quietly. The woman rose to her feet and paced over to him with slow and quiet footsteps. "Please, you don't have to be to formal," she added shyly. "You can speak freely around me. It's nice to be able to talk to someone." She smiled at him.

Eleanor nodded. "Alright. Thank you," she replied quietly. The woman rose to her feet and paced over to him with slow and quiet footsteps. "Please, you don't have to be to formal," she added shyly. "You can speak freely around me. It's nice to be able to talk to someone." She smiled at him.
“Thank you, your Majesty.” Thomas nodded, feeling a small sense of relief at her request. “I would still like to apologize for… if I sounded like a fool just now.” he added. Honestly, he didn't like using that flowery speech… Though the more he thought about it, it had likely been a joke from a higher ranking officer.

Eleanor shook her head. "No, you sounded just like every other guard I've met so far. I'm not used to these formalities just as much as you're not. You have no need to apologize to me." She smiled easily and brushed her dark hair over her shoulder. "I haven't spoken with anyone here for a while, so I'm not even sure what I'm supposed to say," she admitted honestly.
A small shy smile twitched from his lips for a moment before Thomas caught himself, turning the expression into something more neutral but still kind. “If I may say so, your Majesty, neither do I. Much less to someone of your importance.” he admitted.

Eleanor couldn't help but laugh quietly. "I'm supposed to be important?" she asked before shaking her head slowly. "I'm sorry, I just don't understand why he had to choose me. Out of all his people, he chose me to marry." She held up her hand and looked down at the beautifully cut ring on her finger. It was clearly made for someone royal. Selling this ring could feed her entire village for a month. "It's like I'm not even here most days…"
“Well… you are still the Queen.” he pointed out gently. “I can't pretend to know why the King chose you either but he did. It's better to think that he had a reason than if he picked you at random like all those little tarts that come in here.” he said, scowling at the thought of how the King was married to such a beautiful woman and continued to sleep around as if he were a sailor. “Forgive me, Your Majesty. That was uncalled for.”

Eleanor couldn't help it – she covered her mouth shyly and laughed. Her eyes sparkled with amusement. "Little tarts?" she asked incredulously, shaking her head. "It wasn't uncalled for at all, but it isn't the girls that I blame…" The light faded from her eyes, and she lowered her hand from her lips. "I don't blame them at all." She looked sad for a brief moment, then it was gone, replaced by another soft smile. "Though it doesn't really appear to matter what I think."
Thomas could feel his ears burning. If he had said that in front of anyone else, he'd most likely be executed. But the Queen… He had made her laugh… When was the last time that she actually had laughed before now he found himself wondering before his mind caught up back up. “All the same I shouldn't have said that… about them or the King.” he said softly, taking a cautious step forward. “But your thoughts should matter. Even if I'm the only one who will hear them.” he attempted to console.

Eleanor arched her eyebrows slightly. "I told you that you're allowed to speak freely around me. I meant it. Say as you please, and I will as well. It's a small luxury I can offer you in these walls." She inhaled slowly as he stepped closer, but she didn't stop him. She didn't dare.
A small, faint smile broke out on her rouge lips. "I appreciate your efforts, but they don't. Not really. If they don't change things, then what's the use? He never listens to me anyway." She blinked quickly. "I'm sorry, that was… I shouldn't have said that. I'm sorry."
“Again, thank you, Your Majesty.” Thomas managed to actually smile this time, though it was still small and a little shy. Seeing how uncomfortable the Queen looked, he stayed where he was and wouldn't take another step towards her unless she needed him to.
He quickly bit his tongue to keep back the surprised laugh he felt when she apologized to him. “Your Majesty, if you are allowing me to say what I did about those women and your husband, then you can certainly say whatever you want. Without needing to apologize.” he assured. “You have my word that I will not repeat any of this to a single soul.”

The young queen closed her eyes and interjected before he could say anything more. "Eleanor," she said quietly. "My name is Eleanor."
She slowly opened her eyes and looked back up at him. "I see them leave," she whispered quietly. "Every morning without delay. The gates open just wide enough for them, and then they shut. I don't know if he wants me to know, or if he just doesn't care…" Eleanor blinked quickly. "I'm sorry, I don't know what's gotten into me… it's been a while since I've had someone else to talk to."
