The night buzzed with the sounds of crickets and frogs, Night sky tinted purple, millions of stars shining down. It would have been peaceful, if it had not been for the procession of forlorn humans making their way deep into the forest. Celeste watched with mild amusement from her perch in the sky. The humans did this sometimes; leaving a sacrifice to keep her from destroying their precious village. She smirked. Though she was invisible to the humans, she could tell that the older ones could feel her presence. She glanced down on the poor mortal they were giving up to her. Yes, she would do well for what Celeste intended.
Mary struggled around, the leaders had made the mistake of not gagging her. "Let me go you worthless pieces of oil-filled coal mines!" She yelled, pushing her arms against the ropes. Mary's arms were already a bit bloody from the ropes and her dress had a few tears from when the leaders had fucking taken her from her house!

No one responded, simply carrying her farther away from her home into the now foreboding forest. Celeste, intrigued by this mortal, kept a close eye on the precession; she wasn't going to let one of the other gods get this mortal. Usually, she was more than happy to let one of the more… savage gods have the sacrifices, but she wanted this one.
"Let me go!" She screamed, kicking her leg out and actually hitting one of the main people carrying her. She was knocked to the ground and tried to run, only falling to the ground with a huff. Why me? I only ask a few questions and now it's off to death row. She thought while being picked back up.

Finally, the precession reached the old, moss-covered rock where Mary was to be left. The people carrying her held her to the rock as others secured her with more ropes. The leader of the group turned to the forest, speaking the ancient rites. Celeste had to wait until the villagers left before she could claim her new servant, but she would be patient.
"When I get out of here I'm setting the village on fire." She threatened, hissing through her teeth and sounding almost like a snake. Okay, she might have been chosen because she liked to light things on fire, might have.

Finally, the last rites were said as the people started to stream out; already, the darker gods were starting to stir as the last of the humans quickly fled. Celeste would have to act quickly if she wanted this human for herself. When the last human disappeared from view, Celeste hopped down from her seat in the sky, landing with a graceful motion. The human wouldn't be able to see her yet, but her presence was quite clear.
"Fucking gods, of course, a god is going to come here and shit." Mary groaned, of course she was pissed. She just got kicked out of her home town and tied up like a hog to be sacrificed. Who wouldn't be pissed?

Celeste, at the human's outburst, decided to finally show herself.
"Hello, human," she said cooly, stepping forward. Her eyes sparkled like stars, her hair a perfect copy of the night sky. Stars floated about her head, and her silver robes shown dimly.
Mary squinted, trying to make out the figure with her horrible eyesight. "Lady Celeste? Well, at least I'm being sacrificed to a god who doesn't fuck with humanity too much." Mary muttered, Celeste was one of her favorites, the one she would pray too if she prayed.

Celeste chuckled, moving to stand directky in front of Mary. Celeste towered over her, a good seven feet tall.
"What if I told you you weren't going to die, little one."
"I would say, I know how this works and I'm not selling my soul again." Mary looked serious before giving a strained chuckle. "Anyhow, yes, please don't kill me."

Celeste smiled, bending down to untie the ropes holding the human to the rock.
"I won't. However," Celeste said, "that doesn't mean I'm going to let you go. I need a new servant; think you can handle that?"
Mary let out another strained chuckle, this one sounding more stressed. "Sure, what would I do?" She asked, trying to at least get her face and voice to remain calm even though she was screaming at the top of her lungs on the inside.

"All you'll really have to do is keep me company; it gets lonely up in my palace sometimes." Celeste let the first ropes drop to the ground; now, she worked on the ones actually binding the human now.
"Oh, alright." Mary let out a relieved sigh, she could do that. She was… Okay at keeping people company. Maybe Lady Celeste would teach her how to read, she had always wanted to know. Oh shut up brain, just be thankful you aren't dead. She thought to herself crossly.

Celeste released the last of the bonds holding the mortal. She examined her mortal's cuts from how she had struggled. Her touch was light and gentle to keep from agrivating the wounds any more.
"Yeah, I probably should've struggled less…" Mary looked down at her arms, wrinkling her nose at the stinging cuts. "In my defence, I thought I was going to die." She looked up instead of down more, she didn't want to look at them anymore.

"A reasonable assumption," Celeste commented, finishing looking over the human girl and standing. "If I had not come when I had to claim you, you'd already be on your way to the Underworld." Celeste collected the ropes with the bloodstains, tossing them towards the trees.
"Take your share, but take no more," she said quietly. A dozen bestial gods seemed to materialize, fighting over the blood. Some would occasionally glance up when they caught scent of the human, but would quickly shy away when Celeste stepped between them and the human.
Mary gave a small snarl when someone came near her, her teeth were a bit sharpened, her family had werewolf blood in it, so that explained that. "Oh, that's fun. Alrighty, then I'm glad you came when you did. I don't enjoy being dead."

Celeste chuckled, keeping a wary eye on the other gods as they started to retreat into the forest to continue their battle. Finally, she turned back to the human, holding her hand out.
"I think it's time we go to my home, now," she said.
Mary took the hand, clutching it tightly. "Okay." She said in a small voice, her original anger had been replaced by fear. She trusted Celeste, but yet again, she was afraid this was all an elaborate hoax for the village to get revenge.

Celeste smiled comfortingly down at the human.
"There is no need to be afraid, little one." She pulled the human close, wrapping her other arm around the mortal. Then, making sure she had a tight grip on her human, she leaped into the air, quickly flying back to the sky. For a moment, they were weightless, floating above the world. They stayed there, just for a moment, before Celeste set down lightly.
Mary felt all the blood rush to her head as they flew into the air, she felt a bit sick. Oh gods, if this is what flying feels like I'm never doing it again, I feel like I'm going to vomit up my morning meal.
