Oof)

At some time around ten, Alex's father came home.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex was already in a kitchen, finishing up dinner for his dad when he came home. The slam of the door had him wincing.

@KalamariCakes

"Alex…!" His father bellowed in a drunken bumble. "Alex, git here!"

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex sighed quietly, slowly making his way to his dad, “Yes, Sir?”

@KalamariCakes

"Why aren't you in bed?" He slurred, "Disobedient," he laughed cruelly, "Like your mother."

@ElderGod-Carrots

He winced, “I made you dinner, I was going to go to bed right after, I swear it.”

@KalamariCakes

"Swear it? What're you cooking?" He replied, strings of oily hair across his face. He'd been in a slow downward spiral for almost five years now, physically and mentally.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex swallowed, “Ch-Chicken fried rice.” He replied, looking down at his feet.

@KalamariCakes

"Lemme try." His father growled.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex quickly hurried off, grabbing a bowl and placing a serving into it. He hurried back, handing his dad the bowl and trying not to shake.

@KalamariCakes

He picked out a piece of chicken with his bare fingers, taking a bite of it, and flicking it at his son's face.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex winced a little, but didn’t dare move anymore then that.

@KalamariCakes

"Go to bed." His father spoke gruffly, heading for the sofa.

@ElderGod-Carrots

“Yes Sir.” He mumbled, heading for his room.

@KalamariCakes

Silence trailed behind Alex, heavy and thick.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex slowly climbed into bed, sitting under the covers for what felt like hours, awake and hopeless.

@KalamariCakes

A hard thunk smacked against his window.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex jumped, head snapping to his window. Cautiously, he walked towards it.

@KalamariCakes

A European Starling, a blackbird common in cities, laid on its back in the grass, stunned.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex tilted his head to the side a little but opened his window to help the bird.

@KalamariCakes

It was breathing, albeit quick and startled.

@ElderGod-Carrots

Alex slowly picked it up, stroking it gently.

@KalamariCakes

The bird laid limp in his palm, but its spindly legs continued to flex weakly.

@ElderGod-Carrots

He stroked it gently, glancing at his door to make sure his dad wasn't going to suddenly show up and punish him.

@KalamariCakes

Luckily, he could hear his dad eating in his own room. The bird twittered quietly from nervous fear.

@KalamariCakes

( AH WHY WONT It LeT mE EdiT tHE TitLE )

@ElderGod-Carrots

(Ooftttttt, sorry I was inactive today, been busy but I'm on holiday now!)
Alex shushed it softly, telling it that it would be okay quietly even though it probably didn't understand.

@KalamariCakes

That's ok!)

Yes, it continued to stress out. But thankfully it was unable to struggle, else it would hurt itself more.

@ElderGod-Carrots

With one hand, Alex crawled out his window, shivering at the cold.

@KalamariCakes

Even though it was upwards of fifty degrees in the summer night, the wind and oncoming rain lowered it to the forties. Chilly compared to the blazing days.
