So that they cant leave without finding the key that opens the portal so they can go home. (It is mostly a catch for my characters otherwise they would just hitchhike to whichever world whose key they found first and then warp home.

The keys are found in different rooms of the mansion that happens to transcend the different plains of reality depending on what room you are in.
The keys must all be located before the characters can go home.
The characters cannot go home until their key is found.
The portal that will take everyone home can only be used once.
So if one person has their key they could use the portal and go home but everyone else would be trapped as a result.
Each person has to use the key to their realm and only that key to get home.
They cannot use the key from a different realm to go home.

The mansion transcends reality. As in one minute you are walking in the front hall. You open a door, and the you are walking the strands of time to get to the kitchen. Get to the kitchen. Open another door. Now you are in someone's (or your own) mind. Close that door and open the door that is supposed to go to the dining room. Now you're in the plain of reality from where the spirits watch. Etc.
