Naming Races

Hey guys! So I’m currently working on an underwater race of beings, but I’m trying not to fall into the mermaid/siren stereotype trap. For naming, should I stick with something already known (ex: Oceanaids) or should I try to create a new name out of Latin roots?

Creating your own names could definitely help flesh out the species in a way that makes it yours instead of a sea creature that’s existed in mythology for centuries

You could even make your own name but make it resemble that of a mermaid/siren (eg. Sarryn or Myrmed)
