Jane jumped. “Oh! Wow. Sorry, didn’t see you.” She smiled sheepishly. “To be honest, I’m still half asleep.”

The front door opened. Venus looked up and saw her mother step out onto the porch. "Venus? Who's that?"
"Mom, this is Ender," Venus explained. "He was the one I went on a date with last night when you were still at work."

"Hello Mrs. Armanda!" Ender smiled.

"Same." Jesse chuckled. "Ugh, Ender snores like a lawn mower."

“I know,” Jane laughed. “He fell asleep cleaning one time when we all decided to stay late… it pulled the rest of us out of our drowsiness, that’s for sure.”

Jesse laughed. "Wow that sounds like him for sure!"

Jane grinned. “We were able to stay up another hour after that before we all crashed in the back.”

"Hello Mrs. Armanda!" Ender smiled.

Venus's mother laughed. "Please, call me Jen."
"Short for Jennifer," Venus added in his ear.

"Okay Jen! Pleasure to meet you." Ender held out his hand for her to shake it. I hope I'm doing this right.

Jen took his hand and shook it firmly, the bangles on her arm jingling happily. "And to you Ender. Won't you come in?"
"We're just going to hang out in my room," Venus said, hugging Ender gently inside the house.
Jen crossed her arms and followed, smiling and shaking her head.
"Venus?" Her father emerged from the living room. He seemed a little startled seeing Ender, but easily smiled. "Ender!"

"Hello Mr. Armanda!" Ender greeted.

"Dad, we're going to my room, okay?" Venus partially told, partially asked. Before he could say a word, Venus guided Ender up the stairs. "We'll be down for dinner," she promised. Her father began to stop her, but Jen eased him away, whispering "Let them be."
