"Hey! I'm serious! He's actually really sweet…."

(OH GOOD I WAS WORRIED!!!)

Venus smiled. "I'd love to meet him sometime," she said, giving her ice cream another lick.

(DON'T BE!!!!)

"I'll try and get him over here sometime." He took another bite out of hie ice cream. "Our mom is pretty strict though…."

"How so?" Venus nibbled at the edge of her cone.

"Well, He told me that she doesn't want him to leave her even after he graduates. But she treats him awful!"

Venus stopped eating. Something behind her eyes melted. "Oh."

"Are you okay?"

"Yeah, I'm fine. I promise," she added seeing his doubting look. She gently kissed him for good measure.

"Hmmmmm…" He pulled back. "Nope you're not alright. What's up?"

"I'm fine!" Venus claimed, fingering her necklace as she licked a hearty chunk of ice cream off of the cone. A chocolate aftertaste added to the chilling thrill.

"You are a terrible liar."

"I'm not lying!" Venus sang. Finally, her shoulders slumped and she gave in. She rubbed her thumb over her necklace pendant. "Fine."

"What's up?"

"So… I have two sisters. Lauren is off in college and doesn't even come home anymore to visit. And my younger sister Emma… she… well, she…" Venus sighed shakily. She unclasped her necklace. She held it out to Ender. She let him read it. The pendant was in the shape of a heart. The words engraved on it read:

He could feel tears welling in his eyes. "Aw…man I'm so sorry….."

"I've just… never wanted to let her go. I'd give anything for a little sister- this little sister." Venus wiped at her eyes.

(This is getting a lot deeper than just trying to pass AP Calc…)
