Kenzie took a step closer to Hunter.
"No, I– I heard you. It's just… if you were really joking about that, I don't know why you would be so…" she sighed, trying to find the right words to say. "I don't know… embarrassed? … about it."
Hunter bit his lower lip.
“Maybe it’s because I’m not joking right now,” he said quietly. “You already know I want you.”

"But… you didn't say that you love me. You said that I love you…" Kenzie trailed off, taking one more very small step closer.
Hunter shifted slightly.
“That, er… that was a slip of the tongue,”

"What was a slip of the tongue?" Kenzie asked quietly. She rubbed one of her arms with the opposite hand.
Hunter rubbed the back of his head, sighing.
“What is it that you want to hear, Kenzie?” he asked quietly.

Kenzie groaned, rubbing her face.
"I don't know… What did you mean to say? That's all I want to know. I'm confused, Hunter. I just want to know what you really meant to say."

“I don’t want to rush you into anything,” Hunter said, avoiding Kenzie’s eyes. “I don’t want to put a burden on you.”

Hunter sighed, falling silent before looking up to meet Kenzie’s eyes, his own very serious.
“I’m in love with you, Kenzie,” he finally said after unbearable silence. “And I want you to love me, too.” Before Kenzie could open her mouth, Hunter started pacing back and forth, running his hand through his hair in frustration. “These might sound half-hearted feelings, but I really, really love you, Kenzie. I’m a McArthur man, no matter how much I despise it, and we make mistakes. We always end up hurting the woman we care about. Badly. I don’t want to do that to you. I don’t want to turn into my father.” Hunter bit his lip, losing his cool. “God, we’ve already been through this conversation once before… it must be annoying you now, the complications that comes along with me.”

(Okay, so I'm going to post this now because I've been planning it all night and this morning and I'm going to forget it if I don't.)
"You… You love me," Kenzie repeated. She bit her lip and looked down for a moment, before looking back up at Hunter with tears forming in her eyes. "I, uh, have to tell you something, and it might change things a little…" She took a deep breath, then continued, "In high school, there was this guy that I really liked, but he had a girlfriend. I thought that, maybe, I would find another guy in college or something that I would love and thereby forget about him. Then, we graduated and I didn't see him for a long time. That is until we met at the coffee shop, and I remembered just how much I liked him. And then he asked me to be his girlfriend, and I've been falling deeper in love with him every day."
Hunter froze, feeling his heart beating wildly in his ears. Kenzie’s words kept ringing in his ears and he couldn’t believe what he was hearing.
“You’ve… you’ve been in love with me since high school?” he repeated, disbelief lacing his voice. “And you never said a word about it?” then he paused, muttering a curse. “Of course not. I was dating Keira, and we lost contact. Wow, I just…” realizing he was rambling, Hunter paused and looked at Kenzie straight in the eyes. “Well, now you know that I’m all yours, Kenzie.” Hunter took her hand and placed it on his heart, and despite it being cheesy, he said his last words. “This heart, it only beats for you. It’s yours.”
