"T-they're going to kill me…" he hiccuped. "If they ever get out of jail they'll kill me…"
"They won't," Zanna looked him straight in the eye, "Because if they even try to I will kill them where they stand."
Jay hid his face in his hands. "N-no… I don't want you to go to jail too…"
"I won't," Zanna smiled and leaned back against a wall, "I mean they haven't caught me yet."
"W-what?" Jay looked up. Has she killed someone? Or is she talking about some other crime?
Morrigan crosses her arms. “Yeah, And I’ll help.”
"Nice," Zanna nodded at Morrigan, "Also Jay I've gotten away with a lot of junk in the past. I was a bit sloppy once and the police caught me. Only could prove that one thing, so they sent me here."
Jay didn't respond, still thinking. How long did people stay in jail for child abuse? Could he flee the country before then? Change his name?
"My first foster parents went to jail for abuse," Zanna spoke after they saw Jay's silence, "So if you have any questions feel free to ask me."
He nodded, but didn't say anything. He was worried and relieved at the same time, and he wasn't sure how to react.
Morrigan stayed silent. Why am I so eager to help him but not myself?
Zanna looked at her new friends. Both of them were a bit different than her old "friends," but she liked that about them. Her old "friends" relied solely on brute strength, but these friends had a different kind of strength. And that made Zanna pretty happy.
Jay was starting to see the flashbacks again. All the bottles, the lack of food, simply just being beaten. He shook his head, trying to clear it, but when he opened his eyes they were still there. He held his breath, doing his best to just act normal.
Morrigan noticed his change in mood immediately, saying nothing but offering him another chocolate bar.
Zanna smiled as Morrigan offered Jay yet another chocolate bar. Then their stomach growled and Zanna realized, that they hadn't eaten at all today. Except for breakfast, but that was just toast.
Jay was able to hold onto the bar, but he wasn't hungry. He set it next to him, staring blankly.
"Hey, if your not going to eat that can I have it?" Zanna asked.
Morrigan noticed both the growl of Zanna’s stomach and Jay’s numbness. She pulled yet another chocolate bar out and offered it to Zanna, unsure what to do about Jay.
"Thanks," they grabbed the chocolate bar and began eating it.
Jay could barely hear Zanna, but he pushed the chocolate towards them with a shaking hand. He slapped himself out of the blue, hard, like he had earlier. He hissed in pain, but he seemed to be a little more 'there'.
Morrigan started, instinctively reaching forward but then stopping herself.
Zanna finished the chocolate bar, and looked to see Jay hit himself and Morrigan reach for him. Zanna was about to say something when Morrigan stopped. They smiled and walked back over towards Jay.
"You good dude?" they asked him.
Jay nodded, rubbing the side of his face. "Yeah… s-sorry, it's the only way I can snap myself out of flashbacks…"
"I understand," Zanna nodded, "But maybe we could find a less painful way of doing it?"
"I dunno… usually it was parents who snapped me out of it like that. Although I don't think they knew I was having flashbacks to earlier times… I've just carried on the tradition I suppose."
"Well, it's a bad tradition to have," Zanna thought, "Maybe we could make a new one?"
Jay shrugged. "I don't know of any other way to snap out of flashbacks."
"I'm thinking if pain brings you out of it, maybe we could use just a smaller amount of pain to do it. Like snapping a rubber band against your wrist."
"I'm not sure whether that would be enough, but I could try it." He pulled his hand away from his face. "Am I bleeding?"
