Natalia handed a customer their order with a smile. That particular day, the cafe's business was slow. so Natalia was able to study in between orders. She looked down at her book and tapped her chin, thinking.

Lucas sat in a corner of the cafe with his chocolate lab sitting beside him. He was simultaneously painting some unfinished creature and reading one of his science textbooks.

Kenzie sipped her still-hot caramel mocha as her eyes flicked over her Medical Terminology homework. Study, study, study… She felt like that was all she ever did anymore.
Natalia sighed as she picked up her phone. Her siblings would be out of school any moment now….suddenly she spotted her friend Kenzie. "Hey, Kenzie!" She half-shouted to get her attention.
Lucas looked over at the two girls for a moment before turning back to his painting. He recognized both of them from school, but they were a couple years ahead of him and he didn't really know them. Scout lay his head on Lucas's leg, dozing lightly.

Kenzie's head shot up and she looked around for a moment before her eyes landed on Natalia. She smiled and waved her over.
"Hi, Natalia," she greeted her friend.
"Hey Kenzie. How's it going?" She asked as she walked over.

"Good. I'm just studying for my classes," Kenzie said as she closed her first book and opened one for English Composition.
Natalia sighed as she sat down. "That's good." She said, absentmindedly fiddling with the charm bracelet on her wrist, her mother's last gift.

Lucas stared at the bookmark in his textbook. It had a picture of his family on it, from before Claus and his mother had died. They looked… happy. Complete. He sighed quietly and pushed the bookmark down into the book so that he couldn't see it.

"Is something wrong?" she asked.
"My mom's plane crashed last night." Natalia answered. "I haven't told the kids yet….." She sighed. "And now I have to take full custody of them. I'm not sure if I can do it alone."
(Since they both had family members die maybe they became like, each other's unofficially adopted sibligns basically? And they told each other about what happened and no one else?)
