Kace shook his head. “Not really.” Not much that he wanted to tell him, anyway. If he told anything else, such as where he was going or what he was influenced under, he would get arrested.

Lucian gave a hum in response. “Alright, down to the basics then. Age and gender?” He asked, resisting the urge to chew on the back of the pen.

Kace chewed on his lip in thought. “Twenty-one. Male.” He twirled his fingers together nervously.

Lucian nodded and wrote that down on the paper. “Do you habe a job anywhere?” He asked, arching a brow in question.

Kace nodded. “I work as a manager at the mall nearby.” He glanced up at the doctor, wondering how he got here. What his story was.

Lucian nodded his head and clicked the pen open before writing it down on the clipboard paper. “Anyone that I should contact to tell them why you are not at work?” He asked

Kace shrugged. “I doubt they’d notice if I were gone, but sure, I guess.” He looked back down at his fingers with a faint sigh.

“What are their name and number?” Lucian asked. The patient didn’t seem to have anyone to go to, and it was very saddening to hear so.

Kace gave the information on the mall, his gaze still glued to his hands unhappily. He stifled his coughs once he finished with the questions, sitting in the bed with an aching chest.

Lucian took down the number and clicked the pen shut. “Alright, that’s it for now. If you think of anything or want me to check out that cough, click the buzzer,” he said, nodding towards the small remote with a button on it.

Kace nodded a bit, still looking down at his hands. “Okay. Will do.”

Lucian stood up, collecting his things. He glanced at Kace one last time before he stepped out of the room and out into the hallway.

It had been two days later. Lucian had thought that he had gotten decently aquainted to the patient, Kace, in a friendly sort of manner. He was relieved, though, when an officer came to his office to finally speak with Kace about the incident.

Kace had glanced up from his book that Lucian had given him when the officer walked in. His expression turned to one of nervousness. He shut the book slowly and set it aside, then rasped, “Good evening, officer.”

Lucian had been there the whole time while the officer questioned and talked to Kace. He knew how intimidating the officers could be, so he made sure that Kace had a friendly face to turn to. He eventually stepped out into the hall with the officer, spoke with him for a moment, and then walked back into Kace’s room. “You did good, he has what he needs.”

Kace looked down at his lap, sighing softly. He put a hand on his book cover but didn’t open it.
“I guess. I wasn’t very helpful, though…” He sighed again, this time deeper.

Lucian gave a slow shake of his head. “It’s alright, you shouldn’t worry about that. I told him what all you had told me before.” He thought for a moment before adding, “Also, I have some good news.”

Kace coughed heavily into his hands before shrugging and looking up at him.
“Good news?” Good news was something he hardly ever got. “What is it?”

“You have the choice to discharge,” Lucian responded. He ran a hand through his hair as he smiled. “You have a day or two to make that decision.”

“Oh.” Kace didn’t find that so “Good news”-y as he would've liked. But it did give him a chance to leave this black hole for money. But it also left his good acquaintance behind.
