Pretty much the POV I got the idea from, but here we go. Imaginary friends are real, but can only be seen by people who believe in them. When they are born, children are assigned an imaginary friend; these imaginary friends start working as soon as the child is old enough to "imagine" them. Most people can only see their imaginary friend, but children with big enough imaginations can see other people's as well. When an imaginary friend stops being believed in, there are two ways they can communicate with humans. The most acceptable of these ways is to speak through a person with a large imagination; however, there are certain back-alleys when it comes to talking with the outside world.
Possible warning: If the role-play gets to it, there may be gore.
