“Mm.” Rafael took another bite of his croissant. “Remind me, how old are you?”

"20. And you?"
“I’m 21.” Once again, Rafael couldn’t help but take in her pretty features, and ducked his head for a moment. “Whereabouts are you from?”
"Australia, actually. I didn't live there for very long, then my family moved to this city and we haven't moved since then." Leah replied.

"Whoah, Australia? Cool!" Rafael grinned up at her, rubbing at the back of his neck.

Leah laughed. "Your turn. Where are you from?"
(yeah I know, and I hope life goes uphill for you)
"Mexico," he answered, finishing off his drink with a hint of nostalgia in his voice. "We moved here when I was fifteen."
"Cool!" Leah said. She searched for something else to say.

(Idk I was hoping you had an idea. We could just move straight into he sister-hospital stuff)

Leah's phone suddenly went off, signalling a call from her sister. She quickly picked up.
"Hey love what's up?" She asked. After a second she frowned. "Again? Ron, sweet, why didn't you call earlier? Get a bag ready. I don't care what Mom says, you're staying at my place tonight. I'll take you to the hospital and then we'll go get some Little Caesar's pizza and some ice cream and watch a movie. Sound good?" She paused for a moment. "Okay. See you in a minute."
She looked back up at Rafael. "I'm really sorry, I'd love to stay but I have to go rescue my sister."

Rafael's eyes widened. Hospital?? Thinking quickly, he stood up. "I can drive you, my car's parked just up the road from here."
Oh my god.
"That would actually be great…" Leah whispered, standing up as well as she threw her stuff into her backpack.
(I'mma kinda like…probably going to die or something becauze…stuff…but also I had a serious conversation with this really annoying guy in my sister's class about triggers and stuff and finally figured out how to tell Giovane that what he said triggered anxiety and all that from previous experiences…so I'll talk to him abt that later.)

Rafael grabbed his stuff, ready to go in less than five seconds. "Alright, address?"
"(insert address)." Leah said as she finished putting her stuff away. "I know a shortcut."
"Let's go." Rafael walked down the street as fast as possible, glancing back to make sure Leah was following. "I don't need an explanation, just directions," he told her once they got into the car. "Which way?"
Leah nodded as she started giving Rafael directions.
Rafael followed each direction faithfully, heart rate speeding up. Hospital? What— are here parents— are they hurting her?? Finally, he puked into a driveway.

Leah jumped out and ran to the front door, opening it and waiting for Rafael to follow her.

Rafael quickly followed, standing back so as not to intrude. His hearth thumped, anyone could tell from his face that he was worried.
Leah knocked on the door, and when no one answered, she let herself in and called for her sister. She didn't care if her parents came out and yelled at her.
(Hey, you’re back! How are you?)
Rafael lingered on the doorway, afraid of overstepping any boundaries if he entered. He kept his eyes trained on Leah as she went in, tensed up instinctively.

"Ronnie! You coming?" Leah ventured. A second later a mini version of Leah bounded down the stairs, a backpack resting on her bloody forearm.
"It's not as bad as it looks." Veronica promised. "But let's go before Mom and Dad–"
Too late. "VERONICA! JUST WHERE DO YOU THINK YOU'RE GOING?" Leah's dad shouted as he entered the room. "AND LEAH! WHAT HAVE I TOLD YOU ABOUT ENTERING MY HOUSE!"
Leah quickly pulled herself into a self defense position, holding her arms protectively in from of her as she pulled Veronica behind her.
"Dad, Veronica's coming with me."
"ABSOLUTELY NOT! YOU CANNOT COME INTO THIS HOUSE AND TAKE VERONICA! YOU HAVE NO AUTHORITY IN THIS HOUSE CHILD!"
Leah flinched and tensed, preparing for impact.

Rafael flinched as the barrage of shouting hit his ears, disgust and fear for the two sisters surging in his stomach. He took a step forward, crossing the threshold and entering the house.
Leah's father suddenly noticed Rafael. "And who is this?" He asked, practically ready to explode.
Rafael didn’t bother to answer, only grabbed hold of Leah’s arm and pulled her in the direction of the door, beckoning to her sister to follow.
Veronica followed after her sister and the mysterious man gladly.
Meanwhile, Leah let Rafael pull her out the door, and as soon as they had all left the house Veronica slammed the door.
"Go go go!" Leah said urgently, jumping into the driver's seat as Veronica jumped in the back seat, motioning for Rafael to jump in the passenger's side.
Rafael started the car, fingers fumbling slightly on the wheel as he pulled out of the driveway. Pumped with adrenaline, he sped down the road, going just over the speed limit in his haste to get away. "Is everyone okay??"
Leah looked back at her sister. "You okay Ronnie?"
"Not really, but I can manage."
"Right. Take us to the hospital Rafael."
