Firiko noticed the change in the other's attitude, and his wings puffed warily. "What's wrong?" he asked.

He took another step forward. "Something's… off. The Lakes look normal."
Ahead, a sprawling mass of water glittered in the falling afternoon sunlight, glowing orange along the sky. Rolling blue hills framed the Lakes, densely covered in trees. It was a beautiful, peaceful sight, worth a thousand words.

"What are they supposed to look like?" asked Firiko, curious.

(thx!)

Jaoel shook his head worriedly, starting towards the water. "They're supposed to look magic, be full of living things."

"Oookey…" said Firiko, following him.

They got to the shore and Jaoel waded into the water, head swiveling in search of someone, anyone. But the surroundings remained deserted and sad.
"I don't know what happened," he breathed, worry leaking into his heart.

Firiko stayed back on shore, not wanting to get his feathers wet, "What is this place normally like?" asked Firiko looking around.

Jaoel turned around to face Firiko. "First off, my mother and her group are here no matter what. There are thousands of nymphs," he explained with a sweeping gesture indicating the far reaches of the water. "all tanning or swimming or running around."

Firiko nodded in understanding now, "Hmmm…." he frowned, looking around. "Any idea why they would leave?" he asked.

Jaoel shook his head. "That's the thing. They wouldn't."
He made his way back to shore. "They would've had to be forced away.

"Lovely.." said Firiko, his tone sarcastic. "Just curious, but are there any spirits that hang around here?"

"S'matter of fact," Jaoel said sloppily, lost in thought, "yes. They hide out in the trees."

Firiko smirked, "Good, they might be able to tell us what happened." he said starting for the trees.

Jaoel was snapped out of his thoughts by Firiko's words. "Wait! They're vicious things!" he called after his winged friend.

Firiko turned to face him, rolling his eyes, "Are they now?" he asked, loosening the straps to the sheath of the curved sword that hung between his wings.

Jaoel pursed his lips, impressed but nervous. If anything was strong enough to terrify a group of nymphs, he needed to develop caution in the world. "Okay, alright. Go on ahead!" he said. "But don't say I didn't warn you."

Firiko sighed, "Just to give you some reassurance, one of the reasons the area I live in is considered dangerous, is cause it's riddled with spirits, mostly evil, of all kinds. I'm one of the few who knows how to live with them without going mad." he turned back to the trees, his wings held confidently, though his movements were wary.

Jaoel nodded to himself. Okay. He's impressive. He silently scurried after Firiko. "Guessing it's better if I stay back?" he asked

"Possibly, but I'm fairly certain they'll be after me…." he said, fully aware of his spirit aura.

"Ah…" Jaoel didn't dare ask. "I'll tag along," he decided on a whisper as they approached the dense forest.

Firiko kept going till they were a few feet in, he could feel the spirits around them. "Alright. I know you lot are out there and I know you know what I am. So get out here before I make you come out" he said firmly.

Little by little a thin green cloud detached from the mossy forest floor. It gradually rose to form a curvy young woman, who proceeded to circle Firiko.
"An aura?" she questioned in hissing, bitter voice.

Firiko faced her head on, summoning a silver flame in the palm of his left hand. "You know what I am." He said, his tone commanding. "Now, do you know what happened to the inhabitants of the lake?"

She let out a laugh like a wolf's bark. "You think you scare me?" she snipped, jerking her head towards the flame. She stepped right up to Firiko and plucked one of his feathers– it quickly disintegrated between her bony fingers.

Firiko growled, his wing flinching back, the flames instantly encircling her. "Answer the question." He growled, glaring at her, wings flared menacingly.

She evaporated and reappeared behind him. "You think you're stronger?" she spat vehemently. "You dare threaten me in my own territory?"

Firiko put up a shield, sidestepping to face her. "I've dealt with worse than you." He growled, his features stony and firm. "Now answer the question and I'll leave."

"How about no?" she chirped angrily, glaring at the intrudern
