Darren kissed her forehead before getting up and making his way up the stairs, carefully placing each foot so he wouldn't be noticed.

Lillian’s mother was waiting at the top of the stairs. She said very calculatedly once Darren had reached the top of the stairs and was far away enough that Lillian could hear them, but not enlightened to know what they were talking about, “I hope you haven’t forgotten about our little deal.”

"You broke our deal." Darren laughed, "I literally just watched you break your end of the bargain."

Lillian’s mother frowned and her words were venom, “I want you out of my house this instant you bastard. And if I ever see or here from you again I promise that slut will face the consequences.”

Just then Lillian’s father walked into the kitchen, he gave Darren a knowing look before winking at him. He began to kiss Lillian’s mother and motioned for Darren to go, not out the door. But to the basement where Lillian was while he distracted his wife.

"You stop hurting her, you make sure she knows every day you care, even if it is fake. And I can get her to quit, but you have to promise me or I won't do it." The words stung his mouth as they came out and his heart felt like someone had ripped it out of his chest. You're doing this for her, she'll be safe, she'll be happy. That's what matters.
