I am I a failure?

The mist was unbearable. It stank; of death, and dead things. It was too thick to see what was right in front of your nose, but dim shapes could be seen moving far away. Brittle crunchings and snappings warred with marshy splashings and squelchings.

Raven walked around the place, trying to make as little noise as possible while staying low.

A shape loomed up out of the mist, and Raven ran into it before she could stop. It gave a hiss of fear and pulled back, the sudden motion chasing away some of the choking mist. A tall man stood there, silver knife in hand. He gazed wearily at Raven.

She looked at the man and watched his every move while her right hand crept over to her knife.

What are you doing here?

"Who are you?" he asked, his voice dull. "Are you here to torment me too?"

"I should be asking that question." She finally found her knife, and slowly took it out, not wanting the man to see it.

He barked a harsh, humorless laugh. "Me? oh, no. I'm not who you should fear. I'm just Sabriel."

"Then, i'm not one you should fear either. I'm Raven."

"Raven…" He tilted his head. "There are no birds here. How did you get here? How long have you been here?"

"I just got here, and I woke up here." She said.

"Oh. " He contemplated his for a a minute. "It's bad here, you need to get out."

"I'll try."

"I wish I could help you," he said sadly. "I don't know the way out."

"I don't think anyone does."

"Then you're stuck too," he said. "You can't sleep here, you know. Or eat, or drink. It won't let you."
