Background: August was only 10 when he lost his hearing. He had gotten sick over a vacation in Europe, and caught a case of meningitis, which caused him to go fully deaf. Because of this, he grew up to not have many friends, as it was difficult to speak instead of using sign language, and most talk too fast for him to read their lips well enough.
