We waited patiently in Mr. Haaze's classroom. It wasn't particularly unpleasant outside, temperature-wise anyways, but the wind had a thing with whipping people's hair 'round and 'round. No one really like the wind, not even Chris. It was funny how someone with buzzed hair could hate the wind so bad, but Chris blamed it on everything. Bad grades, terrible days, terrible shots, terrible hits, anything. Everything was the wind's fault, like it could control someone's grades or anything really. That was the only bad thing about Chris; the rest of him left girls giggling in the halls and classes and his teachers envious. He looked damn fine.
Mr. Haaze's first hour had to relocate (temporarily) to one classroom over. That teacher had first hour prep, so it made sense. We kept hearing their complaints about being in a different classroom, not being able to go on a field trip, why functions were so hard. It was only fair that the winners for the best poster making contest got to go, and that was our class. I don't know why they're so jealous about; we're just visiting a museum of Mandelbrot and see all the cool thing he did. Nothing important to kids who hated math but yet were still in pre-AP just 'cause, which was the majority of first hour.
"Mr. Haaze is taking forever. It must be this terrible wind," complained Chris. His eyes glared down any other complaints except mine.
"Well, maybe the bus is just late. That's what happened to the a class last year," I said. "The kids said that their teacher had to call five times before the bus finally showed up."
"The German teacher," corrected Alyssa. "It was terrible, having to wait forever for it to finally arrive. In the rain."
"Ug, but the bus can still be late in the fucking wind!" Chris complained louder. "Nothing but the wind can be to blame."
"Suuuurrre, Chris," said Emily. Emily seemed to be the prettiest girl in the class. She has gone through three boyfriends, one of whom was in this class. Rumor had it that she was trying to get Chris to date her, but Chris kept refusing. He said he couldn't "date girl smarter than" himself, which is saying something. Maybe he wasn't as perfect as I or anyone else thought.
"Well, I agree with Emily," said 'Lex, the ginger next to me. "Wind can't cause shit to happen. The bus probably broke down."
"Or forgot to be here," I muttered. My bus had forgotten a whole road and turned onto Ridge once. The bus company fired that dude one week from the incident, mostly because my mother and my aunt spam called them, yelling at them.
"True," said Emily. "Things like that have happened before."
Chris got up from his seat and went to 'Lex's, apparently ignoring Emily's comment and mine. "How dare you!" Chris yelled. 'Lex looked just frightened. I felt bad for him; he wasn't in our past years, being a transfer, and didn't really know how Chris worked. Or any of us, for that matter.
Before Chris could do anything, however, Mr. Haaze opened the door and poked his head through. "The bus is here." he said.
We rushed to the bus like kindergartners. Some shoved others out of the way to be first. Not being super fast, I walked in back with Mr. Haaze. He kept yelling at the others to calm down, but they ignored him.
Outside, black numbers read "26" on the hood, side. and back of the long yellow bus. Some were confused, but I was thankful. No three to a seat rule on a small bus!
I swung myself into one of the front seats, noting the bus driver wasn't there quite yet. Funny…
Mr. Haaze followed me in, sitting in the seat directly across from me. "Bus driver had to take a bathroom break." he explained.
"Oh," I said. That made sense, to a point. Most bus drivers could hold it until the bus route was over. This probably meant we have a newbie. Fun, fun.
