I'm super duper new here so I'm trying to figure out exactly how this site works- my friend begged me to come here and then peaced out when I asked about the workings of said site.
Are there direct messages, and if so what are the rules with that? Anything I should know in general? Thank you!!

There are direct messages, and there are no rules besides what users set for theirselves - some accounts will say to not message them at all and others will say message them any time, and still others will say only for roleplay purposes! As for roleplaying rules there's a thread our admin - andrew (Our Supreme Lord and Overseer) - has started called "Roleplaying Rules" that can be found in every roleplay forum. Look to that for details!

There are direct messages, and you can send them either from someone else's profile or by clicking "Inbox" on the forums and manually starting a message with someone by username. The only caveat is that some users choose to either make their profiles private and/or not claim a username for themselves, so those users also aren't messageable.
Other than that, private messages are private and the only rules are to be a good, respectful human (don't spam, don't bully, etc). Other than that, have fun!
