i just need some tips on how to make wilderness survival across the us from Alaska to central America seem believable …
@SavvyWrites how so? is this for a story, is your character supposed to go from Alaska to Central America?
yes, to both. i dont know a ton about wilderness survival, and i need some tips on how to make a survival story seem exciting but realistic at the same time. i dont know how my characters would survive in a foresty setting, like in medieval times, where there isnt modern-day stuff. Just forest and the earth.
well, keep in mind that in medieval times, while people were more used to surviving in the woods, they didn't necessarily have the best medicines, hygiene, or gear. This can be a substantial setback because even if you know how to hunt, get water, and make shelter/fire, you still have to take extra care to ensure you remain as healthy as possible. So I'd recommend maybe having the character be a bit more rugged and enduring to keep things real.
Also, when you look at a topographic map of North America, you realize that any sort of route across this stretch would have to involve some sort of passage through the Rocky Mountains (which is a daunting task, even in my 1981 Jeep Cherokee :P) as well as a few hundred miles of plain desert. If this is a thru-hike like you're mentioning, the differences in temperature, elevation, barometric pressure, and environment could be enough to kill if not extremely careful. What would be cool to see, though, is the character making his way through Canada and the Rockies in the summer, and once they reach the desert, it's Winter. This will still cause some pretty bad sickness, mind you, but it won't be as severe as the environments will level out a bit smoother.
I love the idea, though!! And yes, I do believe with enough willpower from the character, and enough luck, it's perfectly possible for them to make it. ^-^ need any more info?
