What kind of dragon isn't run-for-the-hills terrifying but not pink-bubbles-cottoncandy cloud cuddly and cute? 'Cause I am having trouble finding a dragon that is in between the two.

Either ampithere or wyrm. Ampithere's are dragons with feathers and no legs, and wyrms are just huge snakes (and most snakes aren't that scary). Or, it could be a regular dragon and just not be too scary.
